The Mumbai Premier League Championship Group stage began with a statement victory for Mumbay FC while Hope United secured a close 1-0 win

New entrant Mumbay FC secured a commanding 4-0 win over defending champions MYJ-GM. The defending champions struggled in the absence of key players, including star defender Keegan Pereira, attacking threat Jay Bhavnani, and top scorer Himanshu Patil, all sidelined due to injuries.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, but Mumbay FC broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. A long throw-in from the right was headed to the far post, allowing Regan to tap the ball home and put his side ahead.

Minutes later, MYJ-GM had a strong appeal for a penalty when a shot seemed to have struck a defender’s arm. However, the referee waved play on, and the resulting counterattack off a corner proved costly. Mumbay FC doubled their lead as skipper Rohit Mirza capitalized on a swift break, finishing clinically to make it 2-0.

Few minutes later, Kaustubh showcased brilliant footwork at the edge of the box, beating two defenders before slotting a precise low shot into the bottom corner, making it 3-0 at halftime.

Determined to mount a comeback, MYJ-GM started the second half aggressively. Shamer came close to pulling one back when he connected with a long throw-in, but his first-time effort went inches wide of the post.

Despite sustained pressure, Mumbay FC goalkeeper Joe Paul Bence alongside his backline were in inspired form, making a series of crucial saves to deny the Mighty Lions any breakthrough.

In the 62nd minute, Kaustubh struck again, completing his brace with a powerful effort from outside the box to seal a dominant 4-0 victory for Mumbay FC.

Hope United edge past Kalina Rangers

In another Championship Group clash, Hope United secured a 1-0 victory over Kalina Rangers. Rishi Chauhan’s first-half goal proved to be the difference, giving Hope United a strong start to their campaign.

Upcoming Fixtures

The Championship Group action continues on February 6, as India on Track takes on Kenkre FC in a crucial fixture. With an intense start to the Championship Group, the race for the Mumbai Premier League title is heating up, promising more thrilling encounters in the coming weeks.
