The curtains have fallen on the 2024-25 Maharashtra State Senior Women's Football League, with Mumbai Knights FC sealing the title to complete a remarkable hat-trick of state league championships.

The curtains have fallen on the 2024-25 Maharashtra State Senior Women’s Football League, with Mumbai Knights FC sealing the title to complete a remarkable hat-trick of state league championships.

The final day of the Women’s State League lived up to its billing, with Mumbai Knights, Aspire FC, and Ignite FC Pune all tied on 21 points heading into their respective fixtures. The season delivered fierce competition throughout, but Mumbai Knights FC proved once again why they’re the team to beat.

Final-Day Drama

Aspire FC secured a dramatic 2-1 victory in their morning game against Kenkre FC, with Amreet Kaur, subbed in the 86th minute, netting the winner in the 90th minute of the game. The result temporarily put them top of the table with their fate lying on the final game of the league.

The decisive clash between Mumbai Knights FC and Ignite FC Pune kicked off with palpable tension. Mumbai Knights, known for their attacking flair, took an early lead in the 10th minute through young striker Diti Kanungo. It was a somewhat clumsy goal, a shot from outside the box that slipped past Ignite’s goalkeeper, but Diti eagerly accepted the advantage. Her precision continued, and in the 34th minute, Diti doubled the Knights’ lead with a crispy volley, converting Pranita Nimkar’s curling cross from inside the six-yard box with a first-time strike.

The Knights’ dominance carried into the second half. Substitute Shreya Kaup sealed the victory and the championship in the 73rd minute, striking into the bottom corner to complete the convincing 3-0 victory.

This result meant despite finishing tied on 24 points with Mumbai Knights, Aspire FC had to settle for the runners-up spot. Aspire was ultimately placed behind Mumbai Knights due to the head-to-head record between the two teams. The Pune outfit Aspire FC’s campaign was marked by consistent performances and a ambitious attempt for the Maharashtra Women’s State League title.

Mumbai Knights Head Coach Preetam Mahadik praised his team’s mental fortitude and execution in the crucial final game. “Ignite FC is a young and dynamic team. They already got the better of us in the first leg in Pune. So we knew how they play and everything,” Preetam remarked. “And being a crucial game, the players have played IWL, IWL 2. So mentally, they were prepared. They knew their job, their responsibilities, what to do. I think everyone did their job pretty well today.”

Many might have written off the reigning champions after their start to the season, which was shocking as they only managed three points from their first three games after losing back-to-back matches to Pune teams Ignite FC and Aspire FC. But ever since those early defeats, the Mumbai Knights have been unbeatable. They went on a scoring spree with an incredible 39 goals in the next Seven games, averaging almost six goals per game.

For Ignite FC Pune, the season was largely defined by their exceptional defensive stability and disciplined performances. Conceding just two goals in nine matches heading into the finale, they boasted the league’s best defensive record. They began their campaign with a statement 1-0 win over Mumbai Knights and remained a formidable force throughout, relying on structure and consistency. However, in the biggest game of the season, their usually unshakable defense was finally breached, as the 3-0 loss to Mumbai Knights ended their title hopes. Despite this setback, Ignite FC, with their young and formidable squad, finished a commendable third in the Women’s State League.

The 2024-25 MSWFL season concluded with Mumbai Knights FC reaffirming their dominance in Maharashtra women’s football. The high-stakes final day, with three teams vying for the title, enhanced the growing competitiveness and excitement in the league, promising even more thrilling action in the years to come.
