Hope United FC go top, MYJ-GMSC secure first win in action-packed Championship Play-off round

Sunny Thakur brace lifts Hope United to the top of the table while two goals on either side of the half helped MYJ-GM secure first win of championship playoff round

The latest matchday in the Mumbai Premier League 2024-25 Championship Play-off Round produced two gripping encounters as Hope United FC edged Mumbay FC 3-2 in a top-of-the-table clash, while defending champions MYJ-GMSC registered their first win of the round with a confident 2-0 victory over CFCI.

Hope United vs Mumbay FC – Top spot showdown delivers drama

In a battle between two unbeaten sides, Hope United FC emerged victorious in a five-goal thriller, defeating Mumbay FC 3-2 to climb to the top of the table.

Mumbay FC made a strong start, opening the scoring in the 11th minute through Harsh Bhardwaj. The early lead allowed them to sit deep and frustrate Hope United’s attacking waves. However, Hope United’s persistence eventually paid off when Rishi Chauhan found the equalizer around the hour mark, shifting the momentum in their favor.

The spotlight then turned to Sunny Thakur, who proved once again why he’s Hope United’s talisman. Thakur struck twice — his second goal, a sublime chip over the goalkeeper in the 90th minute, to put a two goal advantage for his side.

Mumbay FC pulled one back in stoppage time through A Regan, but it wasn’t enough as Hope United held firm to claim all three points and leapfrog into first place.

FT: Hope United FC (Rishi Chauhan 60’, Sunny Thakur 72′, 90′) 3-2 Mumbay FC (Harsh Bhardwaj 11’, A Regan 90+8′)

MYJ-GMSC vs CFCI: Champions finally up and running

In the other game of the day, defending champions MYJ-GMSC picked up their first win of the Championship Play-off Round with a professional 2-0 victory over CFCI.

The Mighty Lions roared into action early, with Abhijit Tawhare finding the net inside 10 minutes to give MYJ-GMSC the perfect start. Despite CFCI’s attempts to respond, MYJ’s defensive structure held firm, denying their opponents clear chances.

The second half saw Kamran Ansari double the lead in the 68th minute, giving the champions full control. CFCI were handed a golden opportunity to get back into the game after they were awarded a penalty, but Raul’s effort smashed off the post, summing up their struggles in front of goal.

With this win, MYJ-GMSC climbed to 8th in the standings with a game in hand, while CFCI remain bottom, still searching for their first points in the Championship Play-off Round.

MYJ-GMSC (Abhijit Tawhare 10’, Kamran Ansari 68’) 2-0 CFCI
