CAFA Nations Cup: India Show Fight but Fall 3–0 to Iran
India produced a spirited performance but were eventually undone by Iran’s quality in their CAFA Nations Cup Group B clash at the Hisor Central Stadium. The Blue Tigers held their own for large parts of the game before conceding three second-half goals in a 3–0 defeat.
The first half saw India defend with discipline and organisation, with Sandesh Jhingan and Anwar Ali marshalling the backline and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu making key saves to keep the score level. Their resilience frustrated Iran, who dominated possession but struggled to break down India’s compact shape.
For nearly an hour, India went toe-to-toe with a side ranked 20th in the world, showing great determination and structure. Considering the gulf in rankings and experience, the Blue Tigers matched Iran in effort and intensity, proving they can stand up against Asia’s elite when well organised and focused.
Iran finally found the breakthrough after the restart through Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh. India responded with attacking substitutions that injected energy and forced Iran onto the back foot at times, but late goals from Ali Alipour and Mehdi Taremi sealed the win for the West Asian giants.
Despite the scoreline, India can take pride in their grit and defensive organisation against one of Asia’s best. Gurpreet’s saves, Jhingan’s leadership, and the team’s fighting spirit were positives as they now look ahead to their final group game on September 4.
