NorthEast United Enters Knockouts with a Comfortable Victory Over Odisha FC

NorthEast United FC delivered a masterclass performance as they thrashed Odisha FC 5-1 to secure their spot in the knockout stages of the 133rd IndianOil Durand Cup.

The Highlanders, led by an experienced lineup, displayed ruthless efficiency in front of goal, with Jithin M.S emerging as the star of the show with a well-taken brace.

The match, held at the SAI Stadium, saw NorthEast United finish on top of Group E with a perfect record, amassing nine points from their three matches. In contrast, Odisha FC’s young side, despite showing moments of promise, ended their campaign with just three points.

Jithin’s Early Double Strike

NorthEast United’s intent was clear from the start as they pressed high and looked to exploit the spaces behind Odisha’s defense. Their strategy paid off handsomely when Jithin M.S found the net twice within three minutes early in the first half. His first goal came from a simple yet precise through ball over the top, which he coolly converted past the advancing Odisha goalkeeper. Just minutes later, he capitalized on a defensive error, finishing with composure to double his tally and put the Highlanders in firm control.

Odisha’s Struggles and NorthEast’s Commanding Lead

While Odisha FC managed to enjoy better possession in the first half, their young squad struggled to create meaningful opportunities against NorthEast’s well-organized defense. The Highlanders, in contrast, looked threatening every time they surged forward, with Jithin M.S proving to be a constant menace.

The second half saw Odisha briefly regain some momentum, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed when an unfortunate own goal by Tankadhar Bag, under pressure from Thoi Singh, put NorthEast 3-0 up. Odisha did manage to pull one back with a spectacular long-range strike from Paogoumang Singson, giving them a glimmer of hope.

Highlanders’ Ruthless Finish

However, NorthEast United were in no mood to let the game slip and quickly restored their three-goal cushion. Moroccan forward Ajaraie, who had been instrumental throughout the match, set up Guillermo Fernandez for the fourth goal with a perfectly weighted pass, which the Spaniard finished with aplomb.

Thoi Singh added the fifth and final goal, capping off a brilliant team performance. The Highlanders’ dominance was evident as they cruised into the knockouts for the second consecutive year, reinforcing their status as one of the top contenders in the tournament.
