MYJ-GMSC edges out Abbas Union FC to secure I-League 2 Promotion Spot

In a do-or-die final Group B match, MYJ-GMSC secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Abbas Union FC, confirming their promotion to the 2025-26 I-League 2.

In a do-or-die final Group B match, MYJ-GMSC secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Abbas Union FC, confirming their promotion to the 2025-26 I-League 2.

Both teams had everything to play for: Abbas Union needed a win to claim third place and promotion, while MYJ-GMSC only needed a draw to finish third and book their ticket to I-League 2.

The Mighty Lions started strong, launching several attacks early in the game. The first big chance came when Vidipt Dua’s header found Himanshu Patil in the box, but his shot narrowly went over the crossbar. Despite the near-miss, MYJ-GMSC maintained pressure on their opponents.

The breakthrough came in the 31st minute. Himanshu Patil showcased his quick turn with the ball, beating his marker before unleashing a powerful shot that was parried by the Abbas Union goalkeeper. Vidipt Dua was in the right place at the right time to calmly tap the rebound into the open net, giving the Lions the lead they needed.

MYJ-GMSC nearly doubled their advantage just before halftime. Shannon Pereira’s cleverly taken free-kick set up Keegan Pereira in a well-worked move, but his shot went just wide. Abbas Union also had their moments, with Imran taking a shot from the right edge of the box that went just wide of the target.

The second half began with a flurry of action from both sides. Swaroop Das almost found the equalizer for Abbas Union, but MYJ’s goalkeeper Paramjit Singh made a crucial save to deny him after he beat a couple of defenders to get into the box. Minutes later, it was Abbas Union’s goalkeeper Ishan’s turn to shine as he kept out Vidipt Dua’s close-range effort.

As the game progressed, Tanmay and Kamran tried their luck from distance but missed the target by small margins, while Manuel and Keegan tested the keeper as the mighty lions maintained control of the game.

In the end, the score remained 1-0 at the final whistle, ensuring MYJ-GMSC claimed the third spot and promotion to I-League 2 2023-24.
