Mumbai City FC Held to a Frustrating Draw by Ten-Man Odisha FC

In a clash at the Mumbai Football Arena, what seemed like a straightforward victory slipped through Mumbai City FC’s grasp as missed chances and crucial errors paved the way for Odisha FC to walk away with a share of the spoils.

Despite their dominance, Mumbai City struggled to capitalize on the numerous opportunities, leaving the home crowd in suspense until the final whistle.

Odisha FC set the tone early, almost breaking the deadlock with their first attempt on goal. Former Mumbai City player Ahmed Jahouh’s well-executed free kick from the halfway line found Mourtada Fall at the far post. Fall managed to keep the ball alive, setting it up for Rahim Ali, who, given time and space, struck a shot that narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Roy Krishna took advantage of a defensive mix-up, forcing Mumbai’s backline into an early scramble.

The pressure eventually paid off for Odisha as a defensive mishap by Valpuia opened the door for the game’s first goal. Attempting a cross-field switch from the right flank, Valpuia’s pass fell awkwardly to Lachenpa in the centre of the 6 yard box, who failed to clear the danger. The ball landed at the feet of Roy Krishna, who calmly slotted it into an empty net, punishing the City’s defensive lapse.

Mumbai City responded brilliantly with a flowing team move that led to the equalizer. Captain Lallianzuala Chhangte showcased his sharp interplay with Jon Toral on the right wing. After a quick one-two, Toral’s flick released Chhangte, who charged into space before delivering a pinpoint low cross into the six-yard box. Nikolaos Karelis was perfectly positioned to fire home, netting his second consecutive goal for Mumbai City.

As the first half drew to a close, Mumbai City’s momentum surged. Jon Toral, in a golden opportunity, squandered what could have been a decisive lead. A swift counterattack resulted in Vikram Singh delivering a dangerous cross. Odisha’s goalkeeper Amrinder Singh managed to block the initial attempt, but the deflection fell directly to Toral. With an open goal in sight, he shot high over the crossbar, leaving the score level at halftime.

The second half saw Mumbai City push forward with relentless energy, but they failed to convert their dominance into goals. In the 68th minute, Jon Toral found himself with another clear-cut opportunity. Substitute Noufal set him up inside the box with a clever pass, but Toral’s attempt lacked conviction and was comfortably saved by Amrinder.

As the game reached its final moments, Odisha FC’s Jahouh was shown a second yellow card, reducing his side to ten men. His two-footed challenges earned him a double booking, giving Mumbai City a numerical advantage for the closing minutes.

Despite the shift in momentum, Odisha’s defense held firm. Jon Toral, Mumbai’s most creative outlet, threaded a perfect pass to Karelis in the 85th minute, but the Odisha skipper’s impeccable defense kept his side in contention.

Nine minutes of added time brought intense pressure from the home side, but Odisha FC’s proved unbreakable. Mumbai City, unable to finish their chances, had to settle for a frustrating draw, reflecting on the missed opportunities that could have turned the game in their favor.

Mumbai City FC now have just 1 win in this season so far making them sit on 9th spot. Next up they will face Kerala Blasters again at the Arena.
