Exclusive Interview with Amarjit Singh Kiyam: Leading Punjab FC to Victory in the RFDL 2023-24

In an exclusive interview, Amarjit Singh Kiyam, captain of Punjab FC and a starter in the senior team in the Indian Super League (ISL), shares insights from the triumphant campaign in the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) 2023-24. Amarjit’s leadership and experience played a pivotal role in guiding his young team to victory.

Overcoming Suffering: The Half-Time Talk

Punjab FC faced a challenging moment in the final match against East Bengal FC. After taking the lead in the first half, they conceded a goal, bringing the score to 1-1. Early in the second half, East Bengal FC took the lead, putting Punjab FC under pressure. When asked about the half-time talk and managing the pressure, Amarjit responded:

“From the first day, we knew that our team was in very good form and that the players had made significant sacrifices since day one. Up to now, because in the group stage we played 10 matches in Delhi and then 4 matches in Mumbai, the team had gained a certain confidence and combination. We knew that even if we were one goal down or if we equalized, we could make a comeback. The same thing was advised on the ground and during half-time. All the players were very motivated, so I felt very good that we were able to take the lead in the second half.”

Leading Young Talents: Advice and Pressure Management

As a senior player, Amarjit had the responsibility of leading a team comprising players of under 17, U18, U19, and U20. His advice to the young team and how he helped them handle the pressure was crucial for their success.

He shared, “It was very important for me because there are players under 17, U18, 19, 20, so game time was also crucial for me because I love football so much. I am happy that I am able to continuously play football without injury, which is the most important thing for me. No matter which league or where you play football, the important thing is that you are able to enjoy the game, and that is very important for me.”

He further continued, “When I was small, I only had one thing in my mind: to play football with the ball and with friends. The same applies here. When you perform well here, the opportunities you get become a great motivation for you. So for me, whether it is the Reliance League or the Indian Super League, all football is the same. Wherever I get the chance, I happily play and enjoy it.”

This response not only highlights Amarjit’s dedication to football but also showcases his emotional intelligence and understanding of the importance of enjoying the game. His words reflect a deep sense of responsibility and love for the sport, inspiring his teammates to play with passion and joy.

Facing Former Allies: Engagement with Away Fans

Amarjit, having previously played for East Bengal, faced a charged final. When asked about his feelings and influence with the away fans, he expressed:

“Since it was the final game, I played as a team member of Punjab FC. We wanted to win because it was very important for us due to the amount of sacrifice and hard work we, including the staff, coaches, and physios, put in. Everyone worked very hard to reach the final and to win it. They (the opponents) also made a great effort and a good comeback, but it was a bad day for them. I am very happy that we could become champions as Punjab FC. Their (the opponent’s) fans also came in large numbers, but I felt good that when you play with fans, whether they are the opponent’s or your own team’s, it adds to the excitement. It feels great when the crowd cheers, whether they are opponent’s fans or our own. It gives you motivation and energy.”

Amarjit Singh Kiyam’s journey with Punjab FC in the RFDL 2023-24 showcases his leadership, resilience, and passion for football. His ability to motivate young players and manage high-pressure situations has been instrumental in their victory. As he continues to make his mark in the ISL with Punjab FC, his story remains an inspiration for many aspiring footballers.
