AIFF updates on I-League 2023-24 relegation

The All India Football Federation has decided to impose relegation in the I-League 2023-24 as per the rules and regulations.

In the 13-team competition, NEROCA FC with 14 points and TRAU FC with 13 points finished as the two bottom teams and have been relegated. Mohammedan Sporting Club with 52 points emerged champions.

Last month, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had written to AIFF to hold off the relegation of two Imphal clubs – TRAU FC and NEROCA FC, requesting the federation to consider their plea in light of the prevailing situation in Manipur, which has affected performances of the both clubs. Considering the fact that it was an unusual situation in the state, the Committee had felt a final decision should only be taken after carefully weighing all options.

In today’s AIFF Executive Committee meeting, AIFF went ahead with relegation and confirmed the two Manipur based clubs drop to I League 2. SC Bengaluru and Dempo SC will be replacing them in I League in the upcoming season.

Meanwhile relegation in ISL is yet to be confirmed despite calls for implementing the same. Last season promotion in ISL was implemented as per the AFC roadmap with Punjab FC becoming the first I-League champions to move up with Mohammedan Sporting poised to be the second team should they clear all licensing hurdles this season.
