Mohun Bagan SG triumphs over Mumbai City FC, advances to semifinals
In a gripping clash, Mohun Bagan Super Giant displayed their mettle by outclassing Mumbai City FC with a 3-1 victory in the fourth quarterfinal of the 132nd IndianOil Durand Cup.
This triumph earns Mohun Bagan a well-deserved spot in the semifinals, where they are set to face FC Goa on the 31st of August.
From the kick-off, both teams showcased their tactical prowess in the midfield, resulting in a well-balanced initial phase of the game. However, it was Ashique Kuruniyan’s clever pass from the left wing that led to a penalty situation, allowing Jason Cummings to capitalize and give Mohun Bagan a lead. Mumbai City FC swiftly responded with their own attacking prowess, as Jorge Pereyra Diaz skillfully found the net to level the scoreline at 1-1.
Nonetheless, the momentum swiftly shifted as Hugo Boumous’s precise cross was met by the head of Manvir Singh, restoring Mohun Bagan’s lead. Despite Manvir’s near-miss for a second goal, the Kolkata side managed to maintain their advantage as they headed into halftime.
The second half saw Mumbai City FC intensify their efforts to equalize, with Greg Stewart and his curling shot coming particularly close. On the other end, Mohun Bagan’s attack remained potent, with Anwar Ali extending the lead by brilliantly heading in a delivery from Ashique Kuruniyan.
As the match drew to a close, Mumbai City FC struggled to break down Mohun Bagan’s defense, leaving the Mariners with the upper hand. In the end, the final whistle signaled Mohun Bagan’s victory, securing their place in the semifinals and marking an exceptional performance.
The stage is set for a thrilling showdown as Mohun Bagan Super Giant gears up to face FC Goa in the upcoming semifinal clash, promising fans another spectacle of football excellence.
Additionally, the first semifinal of the 132nd IndianOil Durand Cup between East Bengal FC and North East United FC is scheduled for Tuesday, 29th August, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, with kick-off set for 6 PM.
