Durand Cup 2023: East Bengal secures Quarter-Final berth with hard-fought win over Punjab FC

East Bengal clinched a well-deserved spot in the quarterfinal of Durand Cup 2023 with a gritty 1-0 win over Punjab FC

In a captivating display of football prowess at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan, East Bengal FC clinched a well-deserved spot in the quarter-finals of Durand Cup 2023 with a gritty triumph over Punjab FC on Wednesday.

Javier Siverio emerged as the hero for East Bengal FC, sealing their quarter-final aspirations with a decisive first-half goal. The victory solidified East Bengal FC’s dominance in the group stage, where they remained unbeaten with two wins and a draw. However, the outcome marked the end of the journey for Punjab FC, who finished at the bottom of the group.

The early stages of the match saw East Bengal FC facing some challenges, but as the first half unfolded, they seized control. Punjab FC attempted to exploit an opening with a quick shot, but Prabhsukhan Gill showcased his skills by diving low to deny the effort.

The turning point arrived as East Bengal FC earned a corner and capitalized on it. Borja Herrera’s well-placed cross found Siverio, who soared above the rest to deliver a perfectly executed header into the far corner, granting East Bengal FC a crucial lead.

Undeterred by the opener, East Bengal FC maintained their attacking momentum, nearly extending their advantage before the halftime whistle. Naorem Mahesh’s precision cross met Siverio’s header, which unfortunately rebounded off the post.
