Kenkre FC succumb to RoundGlass Punjab FC

In the second game of their maiden Hero I-League campaign, Kenkre FC suffer a disappointing loss to RoundGlass Punjab FC

For the second game of the campaign, coach Akhil Kothari made a single change to the Kenkre FC’s starting lineup, which displayed a spirited performance against Real Kashmir FC in their first I-League match. Aman Gaikwad replaced Suraj Negi in the team sheet.

The game started with good intensity from Kenkre and their attackers managed to build up the pressure in the opening minutes of the game. Gradually RoundGlass Punjab FC tightened their grip on the game and tested Kenkre’s goalkeeper Tenzin in the 10th minute. Tenzin made a brilliant goal-line save in the 12th minute to deny the opposition the lead.

In the 15th minute of the game, RoundGlass Punjab FC captain Gurtej Singh gave them the lead from a header. RoundGlass Punjab FC forward Kurtis Guthrie doubled their lead in the 20th minute. At the half an hour mark, they were in full control of the game. Kenkre FC players showed good fighting spirit even going two goals down and their forward made some crucial runs in the final third but could not manage to get a goal back.

RoundGlass Punjab went on in attack once again and Guthrie tested Kenkre’s custodian but he stood strong and denied the English forward comfortably. In the 42nd minute, however, Guthrie doubled his tally. At the break, Kenkre were trailing by 3 goals to nil.

In the second half, Kenkre’s coach Akhil brought in Rohlupuia and Suraj in place of Jishnu and Al Azhar. Kenkre players showed some good signs in defense and were looking strong in the back. They were more compact in the second half and didn’t let the opponents roam freely like in the first half.

Around the hour mark, Kenkre showed some good signs in controlling the midfield and also went on the attack on a few occasions. In the 65th minute, Vijay, the goal scorer of the previous match, made a darting run in the left flank but could not create a chance for the forwards.

In the 69th minute, RoundGlass Punjab FC penetrated Kenkre’s defense with a counter-attack, and the RoundGlass Punjab FC forward Freddy took a shot, Kenkre’s goalkeeper Tenzin made an acrobatic save. Within seconds, RoundGlass Punjab’s Kean Lewis took another shot but Tenzin stood out and saved it again. RoundGlass Punjab’s Robin Singh scored his team’s and the game’s fourth goal in the 73rd minute.

In the 79th minute, Kenkre’s substitute Lester Fernandes managed to put a lofty cross in search of a consolation goal but could not find any other forward inside the box. Kenkre’s forwards managed to make an aggressive move towards the end of the game but it was not their day as the game ended in a disappointing 4-0 loss for them.

Next, Kenkre FC will take on last season’s champions Gokulam Kerala FC on 12 March 2022.
