Govt. of India accepts new nomenclature for Sports Management courses

It’s all good news for the booming Indian sports industry of late. As the pandemic stranded sporting activities in the country, the recovery graph has seen an upward steep since the waves subsided.

In the latest development, the Government of India has accepted new nomenclature for sports-related courses. It will see the inclusion of Undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Sports Management and Sports Science spanning 3 years and 2 years respectively.

Over the years, sport in India has slowly shifted from becoming a favourite pastime to a proper livelihood. Further, initiatives from Indian conglomerates have accelerated the growth. MNCs like the Reliance Group, JSW, TATA, RPSG Group are frontiers in shaping the Indian sports ecosystem.

With the rise in demand, there’s a gap in qualified sports professionals. To fill the criteria, various sports management institutes mushroomed in India. The International Institute of Sports Management, the Global Institute of Sports Business, are few renowned institutes in this space. The industry-led professional courses have enabled aspirants to carve their pathway into the ever-evolving sports world.

However, for a long time, the courses got conducted without much recognition. A sports management degree was not necessary for job opportunities in the sector. The unstructured curriculum further added to the woes. It ruled out many youngsters to opt for a niche degree such as sports management.

Well, this is set to change. The government of India’s acceptance of specialised sports courses will standardise the process, execution, and implementation.

The Govt. of India has also started the National University of Sports in Manipur, a state-of-the-art institution to conduct sports courses and nurture athletes. The International Sports University (ISU), a Maharashtra government initiative, will start this fall. The ISU has received a special budgetary allocation of INR 400 crores by Maharashtra government to develop the curriculum of sports management and sports science courses. The first batch will commence this year in June-July. The program will be conducted within the premises of Balewadi Stadium, Pune. Alongside the degrees, a total of 213 sportspeople received grants to train in the facilities.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry’s (FICCI) vision document states that 43.7 lakh management professionals will be employed across the sports sector in the coming years in India. The upcoming inclination in sports particularly in the field of Technology, Sustainability, and Infrastructure Development is further set to change the landscape of the Sports Management sector. The sports industry now has come further in presenting itself as a sought-after career path with many opportunities for all those who are passionate about sports.

A report by Sporjo states that the Indian sports industry is growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.5%. It is estimated to reach INR 150 Billion by FY20-24. The industry will have steady opportunities across segments like governance, marketing, coaching, data analysis.
