My responsibility is to guide the young players – Jorge Ortiz

Jorge Ortiz is one of the vital cogs in FC Goa’s wheel this season. Having clocked 1363 minutes from 18 matches, the 28-year-old Spanish winger has contributed 6 goals and has been a pivotal performer for the Gaurs.

FootballCounter went up and close with Jorge and discussed about his responsibilities, adapting to different conditions, and his time at India.

Here are the Excerpts:

After having played for significant clubs in the past, what is your take on FC Goa’s experience so far?

My experience here has been very good.  It is my first season and it is clear that it is the most difficult because of the pandemic, but I am really enjoying it here.

What do you think is your role for FC Goa?

My role is to help the team achieve its objectives. In my case, helping in attack and contributing through qualities.  I try to bring speed, overflow and work rate to the team. Then there is the responsibility of guiding the youngsters. That’s something I take great pleasure in.

How has the coach helped you in terms of bonding with the other team members, adapting to different conditions and other things?

His style of play helps me a lot and suits me very well.  I have played in many positions this year and he tells me how I can help the team. He has helped me identify how to get the best out of my abilities.  In the end, it is no coincidence that our gameplay is becoming better by the day. It is all thanks to the tactical work we do in training and it helps me to improve personally.

What are your personal ambitions with FC Goa?

It is difficult because we are totally isolated and it has already been for many months.  It is clear that it is for safety and we are all aware of it, but for the player, it is very difficult because everything is much more intense.  We have been here since we came in without disconnecting. Of course, it affects, but we cannot keep harping about that.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to know everything I would like because of the situation we are in but I hope to know it in the future.  What I have been able to see has seemed incredible to me and my colleagues tell me things that make me want to know even more.

What is your take on India, do you like the food?

I liked the food a lot. I like spicy food and liked the things I have tried. Although my colleagues tell me that I have not tried the best things yet and I am looking forward to going out and have a taste of it.

First season in India but playing in front of empty stadiums. How has been your experience with fans (on Social media)?

I would have loved to play in Fatorda with a full stadium but it couldn’t be that way.  The experience with the fans has been excellent, I have always felt supported, and they are always there in every game to cheer on the team.  I only have words of thanks for them. I hope they will soon be at the stadium watching the team and celebrating important moments with us.

FC Goa are placed at the 4th position. They play Bengaluru FC on their next outing at the Fatorda Stadium.
