FC Goa vs Chennaiyin FC – 3 Key Battles to watch out for

When Juan Ferrando’s men face Chennaiyin FC tomorrow, they would want to end their draw streak with a win. Ironically last time Goa lost a game it was against the machans.

FC Goa are currently placed at the 4th position with 23 points having four games left. The Gaurs lead in goal difference but are tied in points with NorthEast United FC, who are seated at the 5th position in the table.

On the other hand, 8th placed Chennaiyin FC have slim chances of making the cut. Statistically, the 4th spot is still achievable via multiple permutations. Last time around, Chennaiyin scripted a convincing victory against Goa in December 2020. Post that, the team lost its way and have failed to find the net in 10 of their 17 outings. However, this time around, Chennaiyin have a shot at turning the tide as FC Goa have only managed to keep two clean sheets all throughout the season.

In a competition where both teams seem equally poised, team FootballCounter takes a look at the key players who will have major roles to play.

Ivan Gonzalez vs Esmael Goncalves

A stout figure at the heart of FC Goa’s defence, Ivan Gonzalez has proved to be an essential addition to the team. He has a passing accuracy of 84%. Ivan is also known to break forward every now and then and has notched one stellar goal from his run. On the other hand, experienced Portuguese forward Esmael Goncalves will pose a major threat to Goa’s defence. The 29-year-old has scored 4 goals and an assist. Chennaiyin have struggled to find the net and Coach Csaba Laszlo would want his marksman to be in top form.

Glan Martins vs Anirudh Thapa

New recruit Glan Martins stamped his authority for FC Goa after scoring a screamer against Mumbai City FC. The 26-year-old midfielder has played a total of 9 matches this season and will have a crucial role in tomorrow’s game. Anirudh Thapa played a major role in the first fixture. Thapa has been a key midfielder and has scored 2 goals from 12 matches.

Igor Angulo/Jorge Ortiz vs Enes Sipovic/Eli Sabia

Jorge Ortiz has scored a total of 5 goals and made an assist after playing 16 games. The 28-year-old Spanish midfielder had also found the net when they faced Chennaiyin at the start of Season 7. Having conceded 17 goals this season, Chennaiyin will want their defence to be in their top form and Eli Sabia and Enes Sipovic will have their task cut out against Igor and Jorge in tomorrow’s game.
