Northeast United in talks with defender John Johnson

Two time I-League and 2019-20 ISL winner centre-back John Johnson, is rumoured to be in talks with Hero ISL outfit Northeast United FC

Two time I-League and 2019-20 ISL winner, centre-back John Johnson is rumoured to be in talks with Hero ISL outfit Northeast United FC

Former Bengaluru FC defender, who spent his last two seasons at ATK is reported to have shown disinterest towards ATK Mohun Bagan contract renewal offer and is now a free player. ATK is reported to have confirmed Tiri and are currently trying to rope in Sandesh Jhingan, which can limit the Englishmen’s game time in the upcoming season.

The centre-back is now looking for a regular game-time and according to source the John Abraham co-owned side is interested in signing John Johnson. The former Middlesbrough youth product, who has one premier league appearance to his name, has spent his last 7 seasons in India, winning multiple trophies.

The 31 year old, has won two I league titles and two federation cup during his time at Bengaluru FC apart from a runners up position in continental tournament AFC Cup. While during his two years at ATK, John Johnson has won the Hero Indian Super League in the last season.

Northeast United FC has struggled to stamp any kind of authority in the league, despite representing the talent hotbed of the country. The club has reached the play-offs just once in last 6 seasons. For the highlanders, this signing would do a world of good in instilling confidence among the fans. A natural leader on the pitch, John Johnson’s experience and knowledge of Indian football will definitely strengthen the Highlanders’ defence.

However, the club needs to step up and capture the player quickly as the Middlesbrough born defender is also looking at other opportunities, reportedly Hyderabad FC, under his former Bengaluru FC Coach Albert Roca.
