All 3 Continental spot confirmed, Bengaluru get AFC Cup play-off spot

Three clubs – FC Goa, ATK – Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC, will be representing India in the AFC competitions for the 2020-21 season.

FC Goa as the winner of the Hero ISL league phase for season 2019-20 as earned a direct entry to the group stage of AFC Champions League. They will be the first club from India to participate in the league

The AFC play-off slot was initially reserved for the ISL play-offs winners. The 2019-20 ISL title was lifted by ATK as they defeated Chennaiyin 3-1 in the final. However, the club has recently formed a joint venture with I-League club Mohun Bagan, as a a result the now merged ATK Mohun Bagan choose the direct entry into the AFC group stage secured by the latter’s Hero I-League 2019-20 victory.

Meanwhile the AFC Cup play-off slot goes to Bengaluru FC, who finished third in the Hero ISL league phase in 2019-20. Earlier it was rumored that ISL runner-up Chennaiyin FC may be provided with the AFC Cup play-off spot. However, AFC wants more emphasis on league phase than that of title hence the slot went to the Bengaluru FC.
