ONGC wins the bragging rights against Air India

ONGC Air India

4th March 2019, Mumbai: The season’s first Mumbai Derby between ONGC and Air India took place on Monday afternoon in the MDFA Elite Division (Corporate Group) at the Cooperage Stadium. ONGC displayed a clinical performance and registered a hard-fought 2-1 win against rivals Air India to continue their unbeaten run this season. A goal in either half was enough to earn all three points.

Right from the kick-off, ONGC looked in firm control. Air India did initiated movements in the final third but struggled to create a genuine goal-scoring opportunity.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 16th minute. ONGC took a deserving lead when Himanshu Patil’s initial shot was parried away by goalkeeper Aditya Mishra which was turned in by onrushing Abhijit Taware on a rebound.

ONGC’s Captain Lalmuanpuia had an outstanding game in the centre of the field. His vision and presence was second to none. He was the link between the defense and the attack of ONGC.

On the other end, Air India were missing a number of players through injuries. The likes of Shubham Mane, Shannon, Santosh Koli, Elvis did combined well but poor decision making led to their woes.

In the second half, ONGC quickly doubled their lead through a swift counter-attacking move. Arif set up Himanshu who had an open goal in front of him.

With two goals down, that’s when Air India introduced Rinaldo Fernandes. The substitute combined so well with Shravan Shetty for the remainder of the match.

In the closing stages, Shravan was fouled inside the box by Dhurwesh Nijap as Air India was awarded a penalty. Rinaldo stepped up and cut short the deficit by one goal.

But ONGC defended brilliantly in the closing stages to secure the bragging rights against their bitter rivals.
