East Bengal signs Abhishek Amberkar from Mohun Bagan

The 27-year-old former Air India and Minerva Punjab player played for cross-town rivals Mohun Bagan in the 2018-19 I-League season.

The 27-year-old former Air India and Minerva Punjab player played for cross-town rivals Mohun Bagan in the 2018-19 I-League season.

East Bengal gaffer Menendez is looking to strengthen the team after number of his first team starters parted with clubs. With World Cupper Acosta, Star striker Jobby Justin already leaving the club, Menedez has his task cut-out. Abhishek Amberkar can play on both flanks as a winger and as well as a fullback, providing much needed versatility for the coach.

Having started his career at Air India youth teams under former India player Godfrey Pereira, Abhishek Amberkar rose up to first team start in the year 2012. After Air India got disbanded, Abhishek went on to play for Mumbai Tigers and Mumbai FC alongside then India International Steven Dias, in the subsequent seasons.

With Mumbai clubs struggling to stay afloat, Abhishek decided to get a job with the Reserve Bank of India and played for them in Mumbai Football Division. Lady luck finally struck for the winger when Minerva came calling in 2017. Minerva went on to win the league that season which brought him to the attention of Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan as they signed him up for the 2018-19 season. After a bright start, winning the Calcutta Football league, the mariners failed to make impact in I League finishing 5th.

East Bengal, who finished just short of the title triumph, behind Chennai City FC will be looking to end their 8 year wait for I League trophy and with number of last season starters already departing Abhishek Amberker would have to play a vital part in their challenge for league title.
