WCG annual rink football tournament to start from September 24

RINK

The Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana, Santacruz will be conducting their annual 31st Inter-Parish 5-a-side Rink Football Tournament – 2018 for the Victor D’Mello Trophy and to be played at the gymkhana’s floodlit tennis courts, starting from Monday, September 24 to November 4, 2018.

The city’s popular and eagerly awaited tournament will witness competition in three categories – Men, Women and open Veterans men.

Senior sportsperson Cademon Carvalho, who had participated in this tournament during the initial editions, believes that it’s the perfect platform for youngsters to get noticed. “This tournament has for years tested and showcased the skills and endurance of the youth of parishes from Colaba to Virar. This is indeed a stepping stone for those aspiring for greater glory,” he mentioned.

Meanwhile, former Indian football striker Godfred Pereira lauded the efforts of the WCG organizing committee. “This is a tournament of very high quality and keen competition that sets the pace and standard to encourage the youth of our parishes to achieve greater heights in the game. The organizers have done a fantastic job putting this together, year after year. Another superb tournament is on cards,” he stated.

Last year’s women and men champions, Immaculate Conception Parish, Borivali and Sacred Heart Parish ‘A’, Andheri, respectively will be looking forward to defend their crowns. The finals of all three events are slated to be played on Sunday, November 4.

Another Indian star, Steven Dias looks forward to once again witness some engrossing and exciting matches. “Like in the past, I once again enjoyed the experience of playing in the tournament last year and also watched a couple of exciting games, including the three finals. I urge football lovers to attend in large numbers to cheer the cream of international and national players and encourage the younger ones, who would be seen taking part in this tournament.”

The champions, runners-up and all the individual award winners would be presented with handsome trophies and gifts.
