Unbeaten Air India sits at the top of Elite Division

22nd January 2018, Mumbai: The current campaign of Mumbai Football’s top-most flight – MDFA Elite Division has reached the halfway mark. Defending Champions Air India is comprehensively sitting at the top of the table while the likes of Union Bank of India (UBI), Western Railway and Mumbai Customs are fighting hard to dethrone their counterpart Air India.

Astonishingly, Air India has won all the five games they have played this season where they have scored 18 times and conceded only twice in the process. Their attacking and defensive performance has been the best so far in the league. If Air India manages to hold their nerves and defend the title, most of the credits will go to their performance against Union Bank of India (UBI) where they won 3-0 at Mumbai Football Arena, Andheri.

Just like Air India, Union Bank of India (UBI) made a stellar start before losing out to Air India in a crucial game. For most of the spectators, this clash was a title-decider game but with the second-half of the season remaining, the title could go either way.

Just a point below Air India, Western Railway is sitting second with 14 points while UBI is third with 13 points. Experienced side Mumbai Customs is fourth with 10 points. Had they not lost against MS Police 1-0, Customs would have been a serious contender for the title.

Karnataka Sports Association (KSA), ONGC and Century Rayon fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively in the midtable of Elite Division. So far, ONGC has only played three games where they have won twice and drawn once. It won’t be surprising if they manage to break into top 3 just like the previous seasons.

The relegation battle is wide open with PIFA Colaba, Mumbai Strikers, MS (Maharashtra State) Police, Central Bank of India (CBI) and Kenkre FC are fighting for survival. CBI and Kenkre are the only two sides to not win a single game this season. Both these sides must fight back to get back on the track until its too late.
