UBI rue missed chances as Central Railway snatch a late draw

15th November 2018, Mumbai: In the opening game of MDFA Elite Division 2018-19 campaign, last season’s surprise package Union Bank of India (UBI) faced newly-promoted side Central Railway at the Mumbai Football Arena, Andheri.

A dominant UBI side only managed to get away with a point after Central Railway equalized very late to earn a 1-1 draw. Dwayne Vaz netted for UBI, whereas, Shahbaz Pathan equalized for the Railways from the spot.

UBI started off quite brilliantly. Central Railway got easily dispossessed in their own half, giving UBI enough space to move the ball forward. Dwayne Vaz almost opened the scoring in the 7th minute when he was denied by Railway’s goalkeeper Harshad Meher.

But ten minutes later, Central Railway’s defense was once again opened up when Melroy Assisi found Dwayne lurking around the box. The sturdy midfielder rolled the ball to Dwayne who finished it off from the outside of his boot to break the deadlock.

Melroy, Craig D’Souza, and Dwayne kept the game following but had not for Harshad Meher’s great reflexes, the game would have been over in the first-half itself.

Railway’s deep-lying midfielder Krishna Naidu also had a decent game. His precise long ball from his own half caught UBI’s backline several times but poor finishing in the final third kept UBI in front.

It was only after the introduction of experience striker Rashid Shaikh in the second-half when Central Railway finally started to look lethal up front.

Railway’s approach in the last stages of the game earned them a penalty in the 89th minute. Shahbaz Pathan stepped up and slotted his penalty in the bottom corner to level the score. Railways sat back and defended quite well and earned a vital point against a tricky and fresh UBI side.
