U Mumba starts with a big win, Century Rayon edges past HDFC

30th December 2018, Mumbai: New-entrant U Mumba kick-start their MDFA Elite Division journey with a big win against Salcette FC while Century Rayon did just enough to edge past Super Division Champions HDFC on Sunday.

U Mumba played Salcette at the Mumbai Football Arena (Andheri) where they registered a 6-0 win, whereas, Rayon’s one goal proved enough to get them going at the Cooperage Stadium.

U Mumba (Nishant Shetty 9′, Digvijay Yadav 45′ & 87′, Karan Kapoor 51′ & 90′ and Leander Dharmai 81′) 6-0 Salcette FC

U Mumba made the best possible start as they thumped Salcette FC 6-0 to win their maiden game of Elite Division Private Group. Salcette FC struggled throughout the game as they were not able to match U Mumba’s intensity in the middle of the park.

Nishant Shetty scored U Mumba’s first ever goal in the top-flight of Mumbai Football with a fantastic strike. Salcette FC responded well and tried to keep the possession to dictate the proceedings. Just when every step was looking right for Salcette, Digvijay Yadav doubled U Mumba’s lead at the stroke of half-time.

Digvijay and Karan Kapoor combined to score three goals in the second-half with Leander Dharmai putting a cherry on the top of the cake to seal a historic win.

Century Rayon (Thotchan 18′) 1-0 HDFC

In the other Group (Corporate) game, Century Rayon recorded their first win of the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over HDFC at the Cooperage Stadium. Both the outfits had their chances and it would have ended in a goal-fest had they taken the chances.

It was Thotchan’s 18th-minute strike which turned out to be the only goal of the game. HDFC had made a decent start this season but they are yet to hit their top gear so far. The Super Division Champions are lying tenth in the table with four points while a victory has taken Century Rayon to sixth in the standings.
