The new and restructured season of MDFA Elite Division is all set to commence tomorrow (15th November) at Mumbai Football Arena.

Union Bank of India (UBI) will be playing newly promoted side Central Railway in the Elite Division Corporate group opener tomorrow.

Last season in a league normally dominated by the two big wigs of Mumbai Football –Air India and ONGC, Union Bank of India (UBI) were revelation producing some memorable performances and even challenging for the top spot till the penultimate game of the season. Scott Ray D’souza, Ranjeet Pandre, Shannon Pereira, Bryce Miranda were the stars of the last season and the club would like to see itself as the title challengers this season once again.

Facing UBI are newly promoted side – Central Railway who come in to the division on the back of excellent last season in Super Division, finishing runners-up to champions HDFC. Having been relegated from Elite division in 2015-16 seasons, Central Railway are back in to Mumbai top division with Shahbaz Pathan, Karim Shaikh, Ajinkya Nalavade playing vital roles in the clubs revival.

The revamped 16th edition of MDFA Elite division will see 2 groups playing in a league– Corporate and Private. Top three teams from each group will further advance to a final single match round, just like in the 2nd Division I-League and the winner of the league will be crowned, based on the final league standings of the qualified teams.

ONGC – Oil & Natural Gas Corporation is the defending champions who had an outstanding campaign last time around. They will be keeping a close tab on their arch-rivals Air India. This change in format has brought balance among all the participating teams which is a great move. It will be quite interesting to see how both the sets of groups fair against each other in the next rounds.

Nonetheless, the upcoming season of Elite Division will surely go down in the history books of Mumbai football with its unique move.
