Western Railway scores late to rescue a draw against ONGC

13th December 2017, Mumbai: In a close encounter at the Cooperage Stadium, Western Railway scored in the dying moments of the match to rescue a 1-1 draw against last season’s runner-up ONGC (Oil & Natural Gas Corporation) in the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) Elite Division on Thursday evening.
ONGC came into the match on the back of a comfortable 2-0 win over Central Bank of India (CBI) in their opening clash of the Elite Division season. Prolific striker Himanshu Patil bagged a brace, proving his sheer ability in front of the goal.
Himanshu’s crime in partner Parminder Singh finally got off the mark when he opened the scoring in the 5th minute itself after combining brilliantly with attacking midfielder Mukesh Ninz. Western Railway’s complacency in the first quarter of the game was quite evident.
Lineker Machado, Mervin Stephen and Somi PT started to pile up the pressure against ONGC’s backline but couldn’t manage to keep their efforts on the target. On the other end, in-form Himanshu Patil and Ennock Annan came agonizingly close to double ONGC’s lead but Railway’s goalkeeper Jagroop Singh was equally good to deny their attempts.
In the additional time of the first-half, Western Railways almost levelled the score after a mix-up in ONGC’s penalty box. Kenistan’s attempt was cleared off the line which was the last piece of the action as the Referee Rajesh Kanojia blew the half-time whistle.
Western Railways stepped their game up in the second-half as they dictated and controlled the match proceedings for the majority of the half. After an eventful display by both the sides, Western Railway finally equalized when Sukhinder Singh scored from close-range in the 89th minute which salvaged a crucial draw against a strong ONGC side.
