Western Railway hits four past Century Rayon

27th December 2017, Mumbai: On Wednesday evening, Western Railway hit top-form to defeat newcomers Century Rayon 4-2 in an entertaining MDFA Elite Division clash at Cooperage Stadium. For the time being, the Railways have moved to the top spot of the Elite Division table with four wins in seven games.

The Railways came into the match on the back of a frustrating 0-0 draw against Central Bank of India (CBI) a few days back at the Mumbai Football Arena, Andheri. Their poor finishing was the major talking point prior to yesterday’s match. But the likes of Mervin Stephen and Linekar Machado proved their attacking prowess by demolishing Rayon’s backline.

Century Rayon started brilliantly as they went all-in to break the deadlock early. The duo of Warchuipi Kashung and Sagar Bedekar caused serious problems in the final-third but once again their lack of killer instinct in front of goal proved costly as the match proceeded.

In the 22nd minute, against the run of play, Western Railway broke the deadlock when an error from Rayon’s goalkeeper saw Kenistan poking in from close-range to open the scoring. The moment of the match came in the additional time of first-half when striker Linekar Machado unleashed a venomous right-footed strike from outside the box which struck the upright and went in. Surely, the best move of the match.

The Railways continued from where they had left as they scored two quick goals in the second-half to go 4-0 up. Within the space of 10 minutes, striker Mervin Stephen bagged a fine brace. The first goal was a sublime left-footed goal which was followed by a delicate dink over the goalkeeper to put the game beyond Rayon’s reach.

But the newly-promoted side struck late in the match, not once but twice when Warchuipi Kashung scored two late goals to cut short the deficit but it only turned out to be a consolation goal as Western Railways rode to their fourth victory.
