St. Paul’s vs Goans SC clash ends in a stalemate

On 3rd November 2016, Goans SC held St. Paul’s 1-1 in the Group D fixture of MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) First Division clash at St. Xavier’s Ground, Parel. The match’s tempo was high as both the outfit kept on attacking both sides with sheer intensity.

Xavier Fernandes opened the scoring in the 25th minute for St. Paul’s, whereas, Mangboi Maolip leveled the scored twelve minutes later to salvage a point for Goans SC.

St. Paul’s dominated the match as their attacking trio of Marshal Francis, Shane Menezes, and Parag Mhatre kept threatening Goans’s backline for the majority of the match with their brilliant link-ups and pressing.

The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Xavier Fernandes’ solo effort put St. Paul’s in front which was a deserved goal after their domination. Goans SC’s goalkeeper Aakash Bhosle meanwhile injured his ear and had to be taken off.

Goans SC started to press high and it proved to be very effective as Mangboi Maolip equalized in the 37th minute to turn the match on its heads.

The second-half saw an end to end match. Both the outfit kept on going forward to grab the winning goal but somehow both the team’s backline stood like a wall in front of the defense to prevent any goals.

Goans’ Abed Mulla came agonizingly close when his powerful shot from right flank almost went in the back of the net but St. Paul’s goalkeeper Girish Solanki made a fabulous save to deny Abed.

Both the teams had to settle for a draw as the referee blew the final whistle.
