Sheldon Rego inspired Companeroes beat G.M. Police 4-0

A hat-trick from Sheldon Rego and a goal from Amit Parmar sealed a fine 4-0 win over G.M. Police for high-flying Campaneroes. On Monday afternoon, Companeroes played hosts to Greater Mumbai Police in group ‘C’ of the Mumbai District Football Association Super division fixture at St. Xavier’s ground, Parel.

The first-45 minutes, saw both teams keeping each-other at arm’s length. But, a stumble early-on in the half from G.M. Police on 7 minutes, meant Sheldon Rego was presented with a certain goalscoring opportunity, which the number 10 sharply converted from – volleying the ball on the half-turn to give Companeroes an early advantage in the game.

The exchanges at the midway-point of the first-half saw G.M. Police hold control on the match, but lack of options up-front meant they failed to make utmost use of their build-up play.

On the other hand, Companeroes were settling into the game – trying to use the pressure exerted by G.M. Police in fruitful fashion against them – countering on all possible occasions, and it benefited them having had quicker players in their disposal.

A goal in the 26th minute from Sheldon Rego was a perfect example of it; Mecwin Castelino found the surging run of Sheldon Rego on the break with a timely pass into his path as the latter slotted the ball past goalkeeper Krishna Murthy Dravidi’s left. Two minutes later, a poor shot from Amit Parmar found its way into the net as a blunder from Krishna Murthy Dravidi saw the ball went in-between the goalkeeper’s legs. A vital third-goal shifted the tie in Companeroes’ favour as they went into the half-time break at 3-0.

The proceedings in the second-half began unsatisfactorily for G.M. Police, who having begun the half brightly faded in stalemate. Companeroes meanwhile, failed to capture their first-half form and rhythm in front of goal, and saw themselves topple a number of chances themselves with a handful of wayward finishing.
The game came into life, when a good solo-run from Sushanth Gorule in the 59th minute saw his shot came-back of the left-hand post. The act-of-play was followed by a number of wasted chances by Companeroes, first and, then G.M. Police.

A defining moment in the game was in the 80th minute, when a dazzling solo-run, this time from Sheldon Rego of Companeroes was finished-off with a somewhat finish, earning the number 10 a fine hat-trick to round-off a great individual performance up-front.

The time, when the full-time whistle was blown Companeroes had comprehensively beaten G.M. Police and took a giant step closer into the next-round, and a win against Bank of India on the next match-day will ensure qualification.
