Minchol Son expects a strong challenge in his new club Mumbai FC

With the new season of HERO I-League on its helm, Mumbai FC’s new North Korean recruit Minchol Son, who they signed from Shillong Lajong few months back had an exclusive one on one interview with Footballcounter.

The 29 year old Central Defender spoke about his new adventure in Mumbai, tenure at Shillong Lajong and his expectations following the upcoming season of I-League.

“My name is Minchol Son, I am very happy to join Mumbai FC and it will be incredible to see us finishing higher in the I-League standings. Let’s work together. Thank You.”, this was the message given by Minchol to Mumbai fans which speaks a lot about Mumbai FC’s ambition for the upcoming season.

Minchol Son who joined Shillong Lajong from Japanese side FC Ryukyu in 2012, made his impact for the North East based club when Shillong finished at its highest ever league standing on 9th position last season . The 29 year old captained his side for the whole season and made his name in the I-League which attracted Mumbai FC’s management. The deal was finalized couple of months ago when Mumbai acquired his rights for the new season.

When asked about the reason he left Shillong for Mumbai, Minchol said: “I wanted to play at higher level and this year Mumbai FC is better than the last season. This is my new challenge and new opportunity to prove myself.”

The former North Korean U-23 defender is eager to improve his goal tally this season.

“I want to score a lot of goals this season (laughs) as I have only found the back of the net only once at my time in Shillong Lajong.”, Minchol further added.

Minchol also found Mumbai a better place than Shillong, he was quoted as saying: “Mumbai is a great place. There are hundreds of shop, Starbucks (laughs) it has everything. It is like Tokyo which makes it more comfortable for me to live here.”

Speaking about the stadium, atmosphere and fans the 29 year old defender said: “I don’t know much about the atmosphere in the stadium here in Mumbai, We need to get results in order to attract more fans towards the beautiful game. Our game is always for the fans.”

Having played in North Korea and Japan in his rookie days, Minchol Son’s experience will be key for Mumbai FC this season as the ‘Mumbaikars’ is looking for their maiden I-League Title.
