Yatish Shetty shines as Veniza Virar wins after a Penalty Shootout

Veniza Virar won after a penalty shootout in the 2nd Division semifinal’s held at Xavier’s ground ‘Parel’ and then won 5-4 against Somaiya Vidyavihar and would be competing with Century Rayon in the finals of the 2nd Division on Saturday.

The first half was dominated by Somaiya Vidyavihar as the defenders of Veniza Virar were weak and failed in marking Somaiya Vidyavihar Strikers.

But it was Veniza Virar who got to score the first goal of the day in the 54th minute. Lekhraj Kotian crossed the ball in from the right wing and Pragnesh Solanki finished it perfectly.

The goal pushed Somaiya to attack mode and 10 minutes later Sanket Mayekar scored to equalize and the game became ever entertaining.

With a penalty being evident, in the 68th minute Somaiya Vidyavihar replaced their goalkeeper with another, Omkar Kulkarni coming in for Rushikesh Mulay.

The second half ended with both teams attacking and counterattacking but with the end of the extra time the scored remained the same 1-1.

So the winner had to be decided based on Penalty shootout. Sanket Mayekar, Himesh Mistry and Siddesh Bhagwat scored for Somaiya Vidyavihar in the penalties while Rishikesh Shinde and  Ajankya Kadam failed to score.

Veniza Virar’s Manmohan Rana, Pragnesh Solanki, Chetansingh Piwal scored and Lekhraj Kotian kick was saved.

It was all eyes on Yatish Shetty who was also the goalie during the Penalty shootout as well as took the last shoot which helped Veniza Virar to win 5-4 over Somaiya Vidyavihar and now Veniza Virar look to face Century Rayon in the finals.
