The Mirror Women’s Soccer League to kick off at Cooperage tomorrow

The Mirror Women’s Soccer League which will feature 160 Women’s teams across three categories viz Open, U-16 and U-14 is all set to kick off at Mumbai’s iconic Cooperage Stadium on Saturday, 10th October 2015.

The event will be spread across two days as the final for all the three categories will take place on Sunday.

The event is a one of its kind for Women’s football in Maharashtra & India where so many girls will take part in a competitive tournament.

The MSWL is another testimony to the growth of the Women’s game in the state and the credit for the same has to go to the Western India Football Association (WIFA)

The Maharashtra Womens team has performed extremely well in the U-18 Coca Cola Championship as they edged Haryana on penalties to make the Quarter Finals. The result also marks the state’s progress when it comes to women’s football.

The MWSL also brings a unique format to the table which will test the player’s skills as the teams will be playing without an out and out goalkeeper.

Having successfully hosted the several grassroot programmes for girls in the past, WIFA and Mumbai Mirror have taken a great step to provide the girls in the city a competitive platform.

Cooperage is in preparation for the grand event which is likely to go down as a landmark event in Women’s football history in India.

WIFA CEO Henry Menezes was delighted to be hosting such an event expressed great joy at the development in Women’s football in the state. “I have been a player at an International level and I never thought we would get such a wonderful responce from the women. For WIFA, growth of women’s football is a sensitive issue and we are extremely delighted to give the girls in the city a chanve to participate in a competitive league. Its an important step forward for the Women’s game in the state,” said the CEO of WIFA and former Indian goalkeeper.
