ONGC strike late to deny a spirited RCF

ONGC Vs RCF (Rastriya Chemical & Fertilizer) [1-1]

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) had to rely on a late goal to earn a 1-1 draw against a spirited Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers (RCF) side in an Elite Division game of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) on 14th March 2015.

ONGC and RCF both had registered victories in their previous outing but in contrasting proportions. ONGC thumped Kenkre FC 4-0 while RCF edged a dull affair against Central Bank of India.

ONGC were the favorites for this game, but it was RCF who stunned the former I-League side with a goal from Gadam in the 30th minute. Gadam managed to get the ball off the ONGC defenders who were holding a high line and then drove at the ONGC goal to score after beating the last defender.

That goal was enough to give RCF the first half lead. But RCF knew they needed to weather a storm if they needed to hold on the slender advantage in the second half.

It was indeed a storm as ONGC came into the second half looking for the equalizer with great purpose. ONGC bombarded the RCF goal with a series of corners post the hour mark.

But RCF proved to be toe to toe with ONGC and some heroic defending from the men from Chembur pointed towards ONGC’s first defeat of the season.

But Kailash Patil was giving the RCF backline plenty of problems as held the ball well in the RCF penalty box and ONGC finally managed to breach the RCF rearguard through Lavino Fernandes’ strike ten minutes from time.
There were no further altercations to the score as the game ended level pegging which meant RCF moved to fifth place in the table while ONGC rose to eighth.
