Maharashtra Football team baged bronze medal in 35th Nationals games

Maharashtra won the bronze medal in Men’s Football event at the 35th National Games held in Kerala.

Maharashtra’s football team enjoyed yet another successful tournament after they reached the finals of the Santosh Trophy.

Maharashtra though started the campaign with a defeat at the hands of hosts Kerala, after they went down 2-1 in the opening fixture.

However, the Maharashtrians fought back and booked a semi final berth, thanks to a 5-3 win over neighbours Goa

Maharashtra though failed to get past the semi final stage, where they were blanked out by eventual winners Mizoram in a 2-1 win for them.

But Maharashtra did not leave empty handed after they bagged the bronze medal after beating Goa 3-1 in a game for the bronze medal.

Maharashtra finished third in the overall medal’s tally behind Services and Haryana at the 35th National Games.

Mizoram continued on their glory streak with the National Games Gold coming just eleven months after their dramatic win in the Santosh Trophy.

Mizoram went unbeaten en-route their Gold Medal with 2-0 wins over West Bengal and Punjab booking their place in the knockouts where they brushed aside Maharashtra 2-1 before edging a tight final against Punjab

The astonishing fact about this Mizoram side was that they had two players from their Santosh Trophy team which won eleven months ago.

This speaks volumes about the pool of players at their disposal, which may be down to the Mizoram Premier League.

Manipur beat Champions Odisha 5-3 on penalties to bag the gold medal in Women’s Football at the 35th National Games.
