Bombay FC comeback proves too hot to handle for Mellwall FC

Bombay FC recovered from an early setback to score a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Mellwall FC in a 1st Division game of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) held at the St. Xavier’s ground in Parel on Tuesday, 22nd September 2015.

Bombay FC got off to a dreadful start when a Bombay FC defender made a clumsy tackle on Mellwall’s Kenyon Alphonso inside the box in the 4th minute of the game, as the Mellwall forward was trying to get his head on a cross from the right, resulting in an early penalty for Mellwall which was well spotted by referee Cajetan Dias.

Scott Tellis stepped for Mellwall and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to fire his team into an early lead. But Bombay FC picked themselves up from that blow and made a good response to going a goal down.

Bombay FC’s striker Aditya Bane was creating all sorts of problems for the Mellwall defense with his blistering pace and he eventually pulled his side level on 27 minutes when a perfect pass from midfield picked out Bane’s darting run through the defence allowing the fleet footed striker to keep his composure and score past the Mellwall goalkeeper.

Both teams went into the break on level terms with Bombay FC ending the first half in the ascendancy in terms of the overall play in that half.

Bombay FC continued to ask questions at the Mellwall defence and Swapnil Yadav was unlucky not to have put Bombay FC into the lead in the 44th minute when his header struck the inside of the post only to be cleared off the line in time by the person marking the opposite post.

Bombay FC won a free kick right on the edge of the box on the hour mark when the marauding Aditya Bane was brought down by the Mellwall defender. From the resultant free kick Agnel George found the net in spectacular fashion as he made no mistake in picking out the bottom corner at the near post and give Bombay FC a deserved lead with eighteen minutes to play.

The second goal knocked the stuffing out of Mellwall and their players began to tire. A couple of players had to carry on despite recurrent cramps after Mellwall exhausted their allowance of three substitutes. Bombay FC were able to hold on for a well deserved win.

Bombay FC showed great character to come back from an early setback in the way they did. The Mellwall players struggled on the fitness ground which allowed Bombay FC to grab the game by the scuff of the neck and force a winner.
