Injury forces Freddie Ljungberg to forego future Mumbai City FC matches, return to Europe for treatment

Mumbai City FC

As marquee player and midfielder, Ljungberg was a critical part of the team’s strategy during the ongoing inaugural season of the Indian Super League.

Mumbai, December 09, 2014: Mumbai City FC today announced that an injury has forced its marquee player Freddie Ljungberg to miss the team’s remaining matches in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League (ISL) and return to Europe for further treatment earlier than planned.

Commenting on Ljungberg’s departure, Arunava Choudhary, COO, Mumbai City FC, said, “Due to an injury from which Freddie Ljungberg will not recover from in time for the remainder of the season, we’ve agreed to let Freddie go back to Europe and follow the rest of his treatment there. It’s been a pleasure to have him as a part of the Mumbai City Football team and we thank him for all the support and experience he’s brought us on and off the field. We wish him the best of luck and a swift recovery”.

Speaking about his exit, Freddie Ljungberg said, “I’d like to thank Mumbai City Football Club for the great welcome and support they have shown me. I’m sad to leave earlier than planned due to injury and that I won’t be able to help my team in the last few games. I have enjoyed every moment and fallen in love with India and its people, a beautiful experience which I won’t forget.”

Ljungberg is recognized the world over for his skill and contribution to the sport when he was part of Arsenal’s feared lineup in the early part of this millennium. For several seasons, he played a major role for the club including being a member of the unbeaten 49 game run for the team. In 2008, Arsenal’s manager Arsène Wenger placed Ljungberg 11th in Arsenal Gunners’ Greatest 50 Players. For his home country of Sweden, Ljungberg has earned 75 caps scoring 14 times.
