New captain announced for India’s U17 World Cup Campaign

Coach Luis Norton asked each of his 27 players to nominate three names as their preferred captain for upcoming world cup campaign
Manipur born midfielder Amarjit Singh has been unanimously nominated to lead the Indian team for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup. Coach Luis Norton asked each of his 27 players to write the names of three players as their preferred captain with the first name to get 5 points, second 3 points and the third one getting 1 point.
Players voted and Amarjit was found to be in the list of 26 of those players, Most of those being as number one choice. Defender Jitendra Singh finished second and hence was placed as deputy to his captain. Suresh Wangjam who led the team in AFC U16 championship last year came out third in the list while free-kick specialist Sanjeev Satlin came out fourth.
Coach Norton seemed to be satisfied with the decision but also stated that he now actually has four players as captain. He stated, “The players now automatically know who their on-field leader is. The players chosen in secret ballet were also the players I wanted as captain.” All four of these popular players have been in the squad since the beginning being the most trusted players of both former coach Nicolai and current boss Luis Norton.
During the voting process, Norton had just one rule, ‘Don’t name the goalkeepers as captain’. He said, “A captain should be one in the centre of field. Whenever there is an issue I don’t want my goalkeeper to run all the way from goal to where referee is located.”
With all his teammates showing confidence in him, Amarjit will have a lot of responsibilities on his shoulder along with the fact that he will now be in history books as the first captain to lead India in a FIFA World Cup.
