Constantine: Our goal still lies at qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup

by Chittu Shetty August 21, 2017

On Saturday, the Indian Football Team made football historians rewrite their history books, as they registered their ninth win on trot against Mauritius at Mumbai Football Arena

India Coach Stephen Constantine didn’t sound overjoyed after having attained the historic feat of winning eight consecutive Official International matches and ninth overall, “It (winning eight matches on a trot) will mean nothing unless we qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2019. That’s where my goal lies and it will be so. I’m not a person who goes by the history,”

“Be it 9, 10, 11, it matters little for me unless we achieve our target. Obviously, it’s important to win matches to continue the momentum. But, our main aim is to get into the right shape before taking on Macau and it’s still the same,” Constantine mentioned.

Last time India won on such consecutive times was in 1960’s. It was the period from 1962 to 1964 when the Indian National Team had won seven International matches on the trot.

But Constantine’s boys have now broken all records having won eight on the trot since AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers Playoff Round 1 match against Laos on June 2, 2016. Stephen shared the credit with all backroom staffs as well while thanking them in front of the media. “It’s not only about me or players. The doctor, physio, media manager, equipment manager, masseur- everyone is part of the job and they deserve the due credit. All of them play their due part to keep the best players on the pitch.”

India will next face St. Kitts & Nevis at the same venue on August 24, 2017. Following which India will prepare themselves to face their third game of AFC Asian cup qualifiers against Macau on September 5th.
