East Bengal were held to a 2-2 draw by Jordanian champions Al Hussein in their opening AFC Champions League Two Group H fixture at the Amman International Stadium. The Indian side produced an impressive first-half display and led by two goals at the break, but Al Hussein fought back strongly after half-time to rescue a point.

Dani Ramírez Fernández gave East Bengal the perfect start, opening the scoring in the ninth minute. The visitors doubled their advantage just before half-time when Anwar Ali found the net in the 40th minute, sending East Bengal into the interval with a 2-0 lead.

Al Hussein responded with greater intensity after the restart and pulled one back through Mahmoud Al-Mardi in the 61st minute. The pressure continued to build, with the Jordanian side enjoying 62 per cent possession and earning 13 corners compared to East Bengal’s four.

Their persistence eventually paid off when Ahmad Assaf equalised in the 87th minute, completing the comeback and denying East Bengal what would have been a memorable away victory. The result leaves both sides with a point from their opening Group H fixture.

Despite surrendering their two-goal advantage, East Bengal’s performance in the first half provided plenty of encouragement as they began their continental campaign against the reigning Jordanian champions.

Indian football has received a significant boost with the introduction of an improved pathway to continental competitions under the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), offering clubs greater opportunities to compete on the Asian stage. Under the new structure, India now has one direct slot into the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two, along with an additional slot via the qualification playoffs. This ensures at least one Indian club will feature directly in the group stage, while another has a chance to join through the qualifying route.

This marks a notable upgrade compared to the previous pathway, where Indian clubs often faced limited and uncertain access to AFC competitions. Qualification frequently depended on navigating early playoff rounds or participation in secondary-tier tournaments, with no consistent guarantee of group-stage representation. The lack of stability meant clubs had fewer opportunities to gain sustained exposure at the continental level.

With the revised system, there is now greater clarity and consistency in qualification, alongside increased representation for Indian clubs. A guaranteed group-stage presence ensures regular exposure to higher levels of competition, while the additional playoff spot opens the door for more teams to compete internationally. This shift also raises the importance of domestic competitions, as league standings and performances will now play a more direct role in determining continental qualification.

Overall, the expanded pathway strengthens India’s position within AFC competitions, providing clubs with valuable experience against stronger opponents and a clearer route to make an impact on the continental stage.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) have been disqualified from participating in AFC club competitions until the 2027–28 season, following a decision by the AFC Disciplinary Committee. The ruling comes after the club withdrew from their AFC Champions League Two 2025–26 group-stage match in Iran, citing serious safety and insurance concerns. Along with the ban, the AFC has also imposed a financial fine of around USD 100,729 on the club.

The issue stems from MBSG’s failure to appear for their Group C match against Sepahan SC, scheduled to be played in Iran on September 30, 2025. The club stated that they were unable to travel due to security risks, government advisories, and the unavailability of insurance coverage, all of which raised concerns over player safety.

This incident proved costly as it was the second consecutive season in which Mohun Bagan pulled out of an away fixture in Iran. Due to this repeated action, the AFC decided to impose stricter sanctions, resulting in a ban covering two AFC club competition cycles.

As per the ruling, MBSG will be ineligible for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 AFC club seasons. However, the AFC clarified how the ban will be applied. If Mohun Bagan qualify for continental competition by winning the ISL Shield in either the 2025–26 or 2026–27 season, the ban will be served in the 2026–27 season, which would allow them to return to AFC competition in 2027–28, provided they qualify again. If they do not qualify during that period, the ban will apply to the next available AFC slot.

Before withdrawing, Mohun Bagan had requested the AFC to allow the match to be played at a neutral venue, but the request was denied. The club then approached the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) seeking urgent relief, but their appeal for a provisional measure was unsuccessful, leaving the AFC decision in place.

The ruling is a major setback for Mohun Bagan Super Giant, one of India’s most prominent clubs, and could impact their continental ambitions in the coming seasons. While the club maintained that player safety was the top priority, the AFC has taken a firm stance on participation obligations, especially in cases of repeated withdrawals.

The situation highlights the growing challenges Indian clubs face in continental competitions, particularly regarding travel, security, and administrative constraints, and is likely to spark wider discussions within Indian football moving forward.

FC Goa put on a spirited display in Iraq but narrowly lost 2–1 to Al-Zawraa SC in their AFC Champions League Two Group D match at the Al-Zawraa Stadium. Despite playing almost an hour with 10 men, the Gaurs stayed competitive until the end.

FC Goa began the match with confidence, controlling possession and dictating play in the opening half-hour. With Brison Fernandes and Borja Herrera guiding the midfield, Goa kept the ball well and prevented Al-Zawraa from creating any real threat. During this period, the Iraqi side did not register a single shot on target.

The game changed suddenly in the 34th minute, when Ayush Chhetri was shown a red card. The dismissal forced Goa to defend deeper and adjust their structure, giving Al-Zawraa a chance to take control. Just four minutes later, Kadhim Raad Albu Mohammed scored from inside the box, putting the hosts 1–0 up at halftime.

Goa responded brilliantly after the break. In the 51st minute, a looping cross from Borja Herrera caused confusion in the Al-Zawraa box, leading to an own goal by Dhurgham Ismail and bringing the score to 1–1. Even with 10 men, Goa showed energy and belief, enjoying their best spell of the match.

However, the hosts found their second goal later in the half with a composed finish, restoring their lead and sealing the final score at 2–1. Goa pushed hard in the closing minutes, defending bravely and searching for another equaliser, but the comeback didn’t materialise.

Despite the defeat, FC Goa can take pride in their fight, discipline and resilience — especially after playing a man down for nearly an hour.

The Gaurs now return home and shift focus to a massive challenge: their Super Cup Semi-Final against Mumbai City FC at the Fatorda Stadium, with kickoff at 8:00 PM.

FC Goa return to continental action tonight as they face Al Zawraa SC in a must-win AFC Champions League Two 2025 Group D match at the Al-Zawraa Stadium, with kickoff at 9:30 PM IST. The game is crucial for both teams, who remain mathematically alive in the competition but must win to keep their hopes alive.

With four matches played, FC Goa know they must win their final two games to stay in the qualification race. Al Zawraa face the same challenge, making this encounter a high-pressure contest for both sides.

Although Goa haven’t had as much recent competitive action as their Iraqi opponents, the team has worked consistently through training sessions. Their strong performances in the AIFF Super Cup, including wins over Jamshedpur FC and Inter Kashi, showed the quality they can produce when they find rhythm.

Head coach Manolo Márquez highlighted the team’s belief and clarity:

“It’s just the fifth game of the competition and we still have small chances to qualify if we win both matches. We know Al Zawraa also needs to win, so it will be a difficult game. But we’ve prepared like any other match. Our intent is always to win, not to sit back.”

For FC Goa, tonight is not only about staying in the competition — it’s also a chance to claim their first points in the group stage before returning home for their final game in December.

Winger Udanta Singh spoke about the experience of playing in Asia and the team’s determination:

“To be honest, it’s a great experience facing big teams in Asia. It’s our last away match of the group, so we want to finish strong.”

As the Gaurs step out under the lights in Baghdad, their goal is simple — play with intent, fight for every moment, and keep the campaign alive heading into a decisive final match in Goa.

This clash holds immense importance for FC Goa’s AFC Champions League Two journey, and a positive result in Iraq could spark the momentum they need at the perfect time.

FC Goa faced a tough test against Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al Nassr FC, going down 0-4 at the Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh in their AFC Champions League 2 Group D clash. Despite the scoreline, the Gaurs showed determination and composure against a side packed with international stars.

Al Nassr asserted their dominance early, controlling possession and forcing Goa deep into their own half. The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Abdulrahman Ghareeb curled in a stunning free-kick to give the hosts the lead. Goa tried to respond with patient buildup play and quick transitions, but Al Nassr’s quality on the ball kept them under constant pressure.

FC Goa vs Al Nassr FC

The second half saw the Saudi side step up another gear. Ghareeb doubled the advantage with a composed finish, before Mohammed Maran and João Félix added two more to complete a commanding performance for the home team.

Despite the defeat, FC Goa continued to show fight and intent throughout. Head coach Manolo Marquez handed valuable minutes to several young Indian players, including Rabeeh and Ayush Chhetri, who injected fresh energy into the game. Rabeeh came close to pulling one back late on, pressing high and almost capitalising on a loose ball before Al Nassr’s goalkeeper intervened.

FC Goa vs Al Nassr FC

While the result went Al Nassr’s way, FC Goa can take plenty of positives from their approach — staying true to their attacking principles, showing courage in possession, and testing themselves against world-class opposition.

With their continental campaign nearing its end, FC Goa will now shift focus back to domestic football, where they are preparing for the AIFF Super Cup 2025 semi-finals. The Gaurs will look to use the experience gained from Riyadh as motivation to deliver another spirited performance on home soil.

With momentum surging on the domestic front, FC Goa now turn their attention back to continental duty as they travel to Saudi Arabia to face Al Nassr FC in a pivotal AFC Champions League Two Group D fixture on November 5, 2025.

The Gaurs enter this contest brimming with confidence after a strong run in the Super Cup 2025, where they have won two of their last three games. A convincing 2–0 victory over Jamshedpur FC followed by a dominant 3–0 win against Inter Kashi have not only propelled them into the Super Cup semi-finals but also underscored the team’s sharpness and cohesion across all competitions.

For Manolo Marquez’s side, this fixture marks a crucial opportunity to carry that domestic momentum onto the continental stage. While results in the AFC Champions League Two have not yet reflected their performances, FC Goa have shown promising glimpses in every group game, creating chances, competing bravely, and growing in confidence despite narrowly missing out on points.

They will draw inspiration from their previous meeting with Al Nassr, where they made history by scoring India’s first-ever goal in the AFC Champions League Two group stage. With belief and rhythm returning, the Gaurs now aim to turn those performances into tangible results against one of Asia’s most star-studded teams.

Their opponents, Al Nassr, come into the match looking to respond after a turbulent week in domestic football. The Saudi giants suffered elimination from the King’s Cup following a defeat to Al Ittihad, before narrowly edging past Al Fayha with a late injury-time penalty in their most recent league outing. Despite the mixed form, the Riyadh-based league leaders remain a formidable opponent, boasting immense quality and depth across the pitch.

Under the lights at the Al Awwal Park in Riyadh, FC Goa will look to blend discipline with ambition, seeking a result that could re-ignite their campaign and mark a significant moment in their continental journey. With confidence high and rhythm restored after a busy domestic schedule, the Gaurs enter this contest ready to test themselves once again against one of Asia’s most high-profile sides.

FC Goa coach Manolo Marquez ahead of their game against Al-Nassr

Speaking ahead of the match, head coach Manolo Marquez said: “It’s an honour for us to play these kinds of games, not only for the players, but for all FC Goa fans and for Indian football as a whole. These are moments everyone will remember for a long time. But we’re not here just to admire the stadium or the occasion; we’re here to compete in the best possible way against a big team like Al Nassr.

We’ve earned this opportunity through a lot of hard work, last season and in the early part of this one. From beating Al-Seeb in the preliminary round to reaching the Super Cup semi-finals, we’ve met our early objectives. Now we’re in a good moment, the team is confident, and we want to enjoy ourselves on the pitch, but most importantly, we’re here to compete and try to win.”

As both teams prepare for battle, the stage is set for a compelling encounter, one that will test FC Goa’s growing maturity and offer another glimpse of how far the Indian side has come on the continental stage. The eyes of the country, and indeed much of the footballing world, will be on Riyadh as FC Goa proudly represent India in what promises to be an iconic night for Indian football.

Margao, India — October 22, 2025:
Under the bright lights of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indian side FC Goa faced a huge challenge against Saudi powerhouse Al Nassr in a Group D clash of the AFC Champions League Two. Though the visitors secured a 2–1 victory, the match will forever be written in Indian football history thanks to a remarkable milestone achieved by young Brison Fernandes.

Al Nassr began the encounter with clear intent, asserting control from the outset and keeping Goa pinned deep inside their own half. Their dominance was rewarded early, as Angelo Gabriel broke the deadlock in the 10th minute with a composed finish. The Saudi side continued to dictate the pace and doubled their advantage seventeen minutes later when Haroune Camara capitalized on another flowing move to make it 2–0.

Despite trailing by two, FC Goa refused to fold. The home crowd roared back to life in the 31st minute when Brison Fernandes, last season’s ISL Emerging Player of the Year, struck a moment of brilliance to get one back for the Gaurs. With that goal, Fernandes became the first Indian footballer ever to score in the AFC Champions League Two, while also establishing FC Goa’s name as the first Indian club to find the net in the competition’s group stage.

Goa’s tactical approach with a compact 5-4-1 structure designed to absorb pressure and hit on the counter. In contrast, Al Nassr’s 3-5-2 setup offered midfield dominance and sustained attacking pressure. The statistics told the story of the contest: Al Nassr recorded 18 shots, four of which tested the goalkeeper, while Goa’s limited forward attacks produced just two attempts—the goal being their sole effort on target.

Though the Gaurs ultimately fell short, their spirited display and Brison’s record-breaking strike provided a silver lining in an otherwise challenging evening but FC Goa showed that they are not a team to backdown even against big clubs. FC Goa will now shift their focus to the return leg in Riyadh on November 5th, where they will look to build on this historic outing and seek redemption against the Saudi giants.

Kolkata, September 16, 2025 – Mohun Bagan Super Giant had a disappointing start to their AFC Champions League Two campaign as they lost 1-0 to Ahal FC from Turkmenistan at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.

The only goal of the match came in the 83rd minute when 19-year-old Enwer Annayev scored for Ahal FC. The late goal shocked the home fans, who had come in large numbers to support the Indian club.

Mohun Bagan, with stars like Jason Cummings, Dimitri Petratos, and Jamie Maclaren, had more possession and created chances but failed to score. Ahal FC, on the other hand, stayed strong in defence and took full advantage of one big opportunity towards the end.

The visitors looked confident from the beginning. In the first few minutes, they came close to scoring but missed the target. Mohun Bagan had their chances too, especially in the first half, but couldn’t finish. In the 37th minute, Cummings shot over the bar after a quick move with Sahal Abdul Samad.

In the second half, the home side pushed harder. In the 69th minute, Maclaren had a clear chance, but Ahal’s goalkeeper made a brilliant save.

Just when it looked like the game would end in a draw, Ahal made two substitutions that changed the game. One of them, Basim Gurbanberdiyew, played a perfect pass to Annayev, who calmly placed the ball past goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

Coach Antonio López Habas was not happy with the result. After the match, he said, “We didn’t take our chances, and one small mistake cost us the game. Ahal took their chance well.”

Mohun Bagan also missed key player Manvir Singh, who was out due to injury. His absence was felt, especially in the attacking department.

With this loss, Mohun Bagan are now at the bottom of their group. Their next match is on October 21 against Sepahan in Iran. Only the top team from the group will move on to the next round, so the Mariners will need to bounce back quickly.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant were drawn alongside Al-Wakrah SC (Qatar), Tractor FC (IR Iran) and FC Ravshan (Tajikistan) in Group A of the 2024-25 AFC Champions League 2 in the draw conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday, August 16, 2024.

Mohun Bagan SG qualified for the newly-rebranded second tier men’s AFC club competition by virtue of winning the 2023-24 Indian Super League Shield. The Mariners had finished third in the 2023-24 AFC Cup Group Stage and failed to qualify for the knockout stage.

Al-Wakrah SC qualified for the AFC Champions League Two by finishing fourth in the 2023-24 Qatar Stars League. This will be the Qatari side’s first appearance in Asia since the 2001-02 Asian Club Championship. Iranian side Tractor FC also qualified with a fourth-placed finish in the 2023-24 Persian Gulf Pro League. They twice reached the Round of 16 of the erstwhile AFC Champions League in 2021 and 2016. FC Ravshan booked their spot in the tournament as the runners-up of the 2023 Tajikistan Higher League. The AFC Champions League Two features 32 clubs divided into eight groups – four West, four East – of four teams each for the Group Stage, which will be played in a home-and-away round-robin format from September 17 to December 5, 2024.

The top two finishers from each group will advance to the Round of 16, to be played in February 2025. This will be followed by the Quarter-finals in March 2025 and Semi-finals in April 2025, before the tournament culminates in a single-leg Final on May 17, 2025.

East Bengal FC, the other club representing India in the 2024-25 AFC club competitions by virtue of being the 2024 Kalinga Super Cup champions, lost their AFC Champions League Two qualifying round match to FC Altyn Asyr on Wednesday, and will feature in the 2024-25 AFC Challenge League (third-tier) Group Stage, the draw for which will be conducted on August 22.
