India ended their AFC U19 Championship 2020 campaign with a 0-3 loss to Afghanistan on Sunday (November 10, 2019) at the Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium in Al Khobar. The Afghans scored thrice in the first half, racing into an early lead. The Indians did try to pull it back, creating scoring opportunities in the second half, and even hit the crossbar twice.

The loss ended India’s AFC U-19 campaign with three consecutive losses.

The match began with Afghanistan taking a quick lead in the second minute through captain Ahmad Ramaki, who scored from a melee in the six-yard box after a corner kick.

The Afghans got their second two minutes later through midfielder Ahmad Nawshad. He struck a left-footed shot from long distance, which took a deflection on its way in.

Coach Floyd Pinto’s boys went forward with attacking intent, looking to find a way past the Afghan defence. Their best chance of the half came through Vikram Partap Sandhu in the 22nd minute, who struck a vicious shot from the right that was just tipped over the post by opposing keeper Hadi Zada.

Afghanistan scored another against in the 29th minute through Khatam Del – as he latched on to a loose ball in the Indian defence and ran towards goal, before scoring past the keeper.

Ravi Rana came close to putting his name on the scoresheet for India in the 37th minute, as he got on the end of a cross from Vikram Partap. However, his effort from close range was blocked by a last-ditch challenge as the ball went out for a corner.

Narender too had a shooting opportunity from the top of the penalty box but his shot was blocked yet again as the ball found its way to the keeper.

After the break, India attacked with vigour and came inches close to scoring in the 51th minute. Gurkirat Singh charged through the middle of the pitch and was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. He took the resulting free-kick, which bounced off the crossbar.

Six minutes later, he had another chance after Manvir Singh found his way to the by-line and laid the ball off to Gurkirat. However, his effort was not on target.

The Indian side continued to press forward and on the other end of the pitch, Akash Mishra produced a fine last-ditch challenge in the 64th minute on an Afghan forward who had a clear run at goal.

In the 77th minute, India came close yet again – this time through Vikram. Narender played in a curling cross from the left flank that found Vikram in space but his header was not on target.

With seven minutes to play, the Indian side was denied by the woodwork yet again. Givson Singh played in a free-kick from the right flank and Akash popped up with a quick shot, which hit the crossbar and was cleared away by the Afghan defence.

INDIA XI: Prabhsukhan Singh Gill (GK, Captain); Muhammed Rafi, Jitendra Singh, Akash Mishra, Narender; Vikram Partap, Givson Singh, Manvir Singh (Ricky Shabong 65’), Gurkirat Singh, Ravi Rana (Aman Chetri 38’), Thoiba Singh.

India will go up against Afghanistan in their third and final match of the AFC U19 Championship 2020 Qualifiers on Sunday (November 10, 2019). Having finished on the losing end in their first two games against Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia, head coach Floyd Pinto stated that the team wants to finish on a “winning note” in their last fixture.

“We have treated every game like a final and will go into the Afghanistan match with the same intensity and attitude as we have. We know that they will also be fighting for pride and we can expect a good game against them. Playing three matches in five days is not easy and we’ll assess the players and see how they recover. We are all determined to end this tournament on a winning note.” Floyd explained to the AIFF Media.

Floyd reflected on the result against Saudi Arabia, where the team lost by four goals – all of which came in the first half-hour of the match. He stated that against an opposition of the quality of the host nation, who are also the defending AFC U19 champions, one’s errors will be punished.

“You cannot give an opposition like Saudi Arabia such easy opportunities to score. They are a quality team and punished us every time we gave the ball away cheaply. The first goal changed a lot of things – we switched off and lost our shape,” he recalled.

He added, “However, we improved in the second half and now, we have to pick ourselves up and get ready for the next match against Afghanistan.”

The head coach reserved a special mention for the Indian supporters, who came out in large numbers to support the team at the Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium and added a great flavour to the atmosphere with their chants and drums.

“They really gave the boys a lot of confidence,” Floyd quipped. “They continued to support us even when the chips were down and we were behind. At half-time, we could hear the sound of their drums and roars in the dressing room and that really made an impact on the players as they went out for the second half. I hope we can give them a good result on Sunday.”

Defender Narender Gahlot stressed on the importance of playing as a unit and stated that all the players are aiming to “bounce back” as one in their match against Afghanistan.

He said, “We win as a team and lose as a team. We have been in such situations before and know exactly what we have to do. All of us are in this together and now, we have to lift each other up and take the three points in our last game. The whole team feels the responsibility to recover and everyone is determined to bounce back.”

The 18-year-old, who will join the Blue Tigers squad next for their upcoming FIFA World Cup 2020 fixtures against Afghanistan and Oman, also echoed his coach’s sentiments as he hailed the incredible support shown by the Indian residents in Al Khobar during the match.

“It didn’t feel like we were playing an away match, to be honest. They cheered for us throughout the 90 minutes even though we did not have a good start to the match. I sincerely hope we can express our gratitude by picking up three points versus Afghanistan,” he mentioned.

The match between India and Afghanistan will take place at the Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium in Al Khobar on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 5.35 PM IST (3.05 PM local time).

India will take on hosts Saudi Arabia in their second match of the AFC U-19 Championships 2020 Qualifiers on Friday (November 8, 2019), after beginning their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Uzbekistan in the Group F opener.

“It was not the result that we wanted but there’s no time to sulk on the first loss,” head coach Floyd Pinto told The AIFF Media. He added, “We have to pick up and dust ourselves off. The recovery process has started and all the players are determined to do everything it takes to win the next match.”

Saudi Arabia, who clinched the AFC U-19 Championship in 2018, picked up three points in their opening qualifier against Afghanistan and talking about the challenge they pose, Floyd stated that it will be a “difficult” game and he hopes that the team can rally together and gain a positive result.

“Even though they won (against Afghanistan) 1-0 through a penalty kick, they dominated the game from start to finish and should have scored many more goals. As expected, it will be a difficult game against them. I am confident that the players will recover from the previous result — both physically and mentally — and continue to put their best efforts in,” he said.

The head coach also stressed on the importance of keeping composure and focus throughout the 90 minutes as it was two strikes in the second half that cost India the game after a balanced first half that saw Vikram Partap Singh and Gurkirat Singh coming close to finding the net.

Floyd remarked, “I cannot fault the players for the effort put in by them. We played a good first half but in the second, we started slowly, dropped too deep and gave the ball away too much. One of lapse of concentration and they scored. Against Saudi Arabia now, it is imperative that we put on a strong showing in the second half as well and if we can do so, there’s no reason why we can’t gain the result we need.”

The match against Saudi Arabia will be India’s second in as many as three days and according to 18-year-old Jitendra Singh, who led the team to the SAFF U18 title earlier this year, detailed how it is the “small things” that enable faster recovery for a player.

He explained, “It is extremely important to to recover well for the next match. We came to Dammam a few days in advance, which helped us acclimatize well and will come in really handy as we get back in shape. It is the small stuff — like taking the right amount of water, the right food, getting adequate rest and listening to one’s body — that is important during recovery and I’m sure all the players will be at their 100% levels ahead of the game.”

The youngster, who made 32 appearances for the Indian Arrows in the last two domestic seasons, shared his thoughts on India’s next opponents and labelled them as the “best team in the group”.

“Saudi Arabia are the strongest team in the group. We cannot afford to make any silly mistakes or we will be punished. After the Uzbekistan result, all the players are determined to correct their errors and get a good result against the home team. The first match is history now — all our focus is on the next game and we are looking to put our best foot forward,” he concluded.

The match between India and Saudi Arabia will be played at the Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium in Al Khobar, with kick-off scheduled for 9.35 PM IST (7.05 PM local time).

A stern test awaits head coach Floyd Pinto’s side as they get set to kick off their qualification campaign for the AFC U19 Championships 2020 – aiming to become the first Indian side to feature in the competition’s main draw since 2006. Drawn in Group F of the qualifiers, they will take on Uzbekistan in their first game on Wednesday (November 6, 2019), followed by hosts Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan.

All the matches will take place at the Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium in Al Khobar, with the opener against Uzbekistan scheduled to kick-off at 5.35 PM IST (3.05 PM local time).

The Indian side will enter the qualifiers high on confidence after two strong showings in Vanuatu and Nepal, where the team finished first in both the OFC Youth Development Tournament and the SAFF U18 Championship respectively. Ahead of the team’s opening clash, Floyd spoke to the AIFF Media in a detailed chat, where he discussed the team’s preparation, the mood in the camp and the “blend” of youth and experience in his side, among other things. EXCERPTS:

How has the preparation and acclimatization been in Saudi Arabia? How are the players gearing up for the challenge?

The preparations have been really smooth and all the players are ready for the action to begin. We wanted to come here a few days in advance and get a few training sessions in before the tournament starts. It helps because the weather here is really hot and considering that two of our matches kick off at 3 pm in the afternoon, it’s important that the boys get used to playing in the extreme conditions. I’m happy with the way they have progressed and confident ahead of our first game against Uzbekistan.

On paper, it is a challenging group. What is your assessment of the opposition teams and what would be the gameplan while approaching these games?

It’s a tough group to be in and all three teams are of high calibre. Saudi Arabia are the defending champions from 2018 and Uzbekistan also have a good record at youth level. Afghanistan too did well in the recent CAFA (Central Asian Football Association) Junior Championship.

It’s going to be a good test for the boys. With our wins in Vanuatu and Nepal, we have built up great momentum and it’s now time to make use of it. For us, our plan is to take it one game at a time and make the most of the chances we get in the matches. I’m certain the players will give their all on the pitch and hopefully, we can get the results we need.

How big a boost was winning the SAFF U18 title, given that the final was a hard-fought one? How has it impacted the players?

Winning the SAFF title, especially given the fact it was our maiden one, was a huge boost for the players. The way the team fought in the final was admirable and it has really boosted the confidence level in the team. In our training sessions, we have looked to maintain the same levels of energy and focus, so that we can carry it into the AFC qualifiers as well.

From Turkey to Vanuatu to Nepal – you have faced opposition from West Asia, Oceania and South Asia. How has it benefitted the team for its preparation and how the players play on the pitch?

For the past few years, we have been very adamant that the team has to play competitive international matches. Since the end of the Hero I-League, we have gone up against a variety of teams in Russia, Turkey, Vanuatu and Nepal. We have faced a lot of different oppositions, all of whom have different philosophies, technical and physical abilities.

This has certainly given the players a lot of confidence on how to deal with different situations during matches. The matches we played in Turkey against Oman along with the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan in Russia are the ones we are now looking at – in order to see where we can improve and what we can expect from our opponents in Group F in the AFC U19 qualifiers.

I would like to thank the AIFF, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Govt of Odisha for their continuous support us with these exposure tours, which have helped us immensely in our preparation for these Qualifiers.

There are players such as Prabshukhan Gill, Ninthoinganba Meetei, Jitendra Singh etc in the team – who have been key members of your Indian Arrows team for the last two years and whom you have seen grow from close quarters. What do you make of their development and how are they taking to the leadership roles in this group of players?

There are quite a few players in this batch, who were part of the Indian team in the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2017 and then the Indian Arrows. As a result, there is a great bonding and feeling of togetherness within the boys. The experience that these boys have gained training together in the last few years has made them tough – both physically and mentally.

We have a lot of leaders in the team all over the pitch and that we will be vital for us when we take on Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan in this crucial set of games. These boys now know the level they need to play at and the focus that they need to maintain. Along with the staff, they have a great role to play as well in keeping the rest of the team focused and drilling home the importance of these qualifiers. It makes me really happy as a coach to see them lead by example and act as role models on the pitch.

The team also has many names from the Indian team that took part in the AFC U16 Championship last year. How have they assimilated into the squad and what qualities do they bring to the team?

Yes, there are multiple players from Bibiano’s (U16 coach Bibiano Fernandes) team that did so well in the AFC U16 Championship and reached the quarterfinals. These boys have been in the AIFF Academy system for quite a few years now and a lot of hard work and time has gone into nurturing these boys. As the U19 coach, it’s easier for me as they already have the required knowledge and understanding, which has given us a great blend of experience and quality in the team.

The experience they gained of playing in the AFC U16 Championship is invaluable and a great addition to the team. Technically, they are very good and very strong physically.

They are here on merit and not just to make up the numbers. They add to the firepower we have already and have contributed immensely in the success that we have had in recent tournaments. They will definitely have a major role to play in these upcoming matches as well.

The following players will represent India at the AFC U19 Championships 2020 Qualifiers:

GOALKEEPERS: Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, Lalbiakhlua Jongte, Niraj Kumar

DEFENDERS: Muhammed Rafi, Jitendra Singh, Akash Mishra, Narender, Bikash Yumnam, Thoiba Singh Moirangthem, Hormipam Ruivah, Sumit Rathi

“Indian Arrows has helped me reach where I am,” exclaimed the lanky goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill as one could sense a lump in his throat.

“It’s the biggest part of my career so far and it has really given us a kickstart to propel ourselves to the next level,” he further continued.

The India U19 team, which will go up against Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and hosts Saudi Arabia in the AFC U19 Qualifiers from November 6 onwards, features a number of players who have played two full seasons of senior-level football in the Hero I-League for the Arrows, including Gill, who has amassed over 2700 minutes between the sticks for AIFF’s developmental side.

As his side prepares for the challenge ahead, Gill explained how playing for the Arrows has made him “mentally strong”.

“It doesn’t matter who I am facing, be it Argentina or Oman, I play without fear. Playing in the Hero I-League has made me mentally strong. Initially, the physicality of the league was a challenge but now I am ready for anything. Last season, we put in some really memorable performances and it was a great experience to be a part of the team,” he said.

The Arrows, under the leadership of coach Floyd Pinto, were a major talking point of the 2018-19 Hero I-League campaign, where they picked up 21 points.

A key member at the back for the team was Jitendra Singh, who made 32 appearances for the team over two seasons, called the Arrows “one big family” and spoke about him and his teammates grew as players.

He said: “The Arrows project benefitted all of us immensely as we got to know how to compete with the seniors at the professional level. Even if we lost a match, we always learnt something new from each game and develop ourselves. It was a really special feeling being together with those set of players and we were all like one big family. I would like to thank the AIFF for this project as it helped us step into the world of professional football.”

The youngster from Kolkata scripted a piece of history in the 2017-18 season, becoming the youngest scorer ever (at the time) in the Hero I-League when he found the net against Shillong Lajong in a 3-0 win in Delhi.

“It is my most memorable moment with the Arrows as it was my first goal for the team and enabled us to win the match as well,” he said.

Under senior team head coach Igor Stimac, two players from last season’s Arrows batch also made their debuts for the Blue Tigers, with one of them being centre-back Narender Gahlot, who also found the net in the Hero Intercontinental Cup 2019 against Syria.

He was one of the star performers for Floyd Pinto’s team and spoke about how playing against foreign players and seasoned professionals helped him “mature” in his game.

“I found it difficult at the start of the season and it took some time to settle. However, as we played more, I improved in terms of my maturity and reading of situations. My favourite memory was doing a double over Shillong Lajong, especially the away win against them,” he said.

“There’s no pressure at all,” the 18-year-old said when asked if playing for the senior team brings with it an added responsibility when playing at age-group level. “I just have to focus on my game and avoid any complacency. All of us in the team keep interacting with each other and learn from each other,” he concluded.

The Indian U-19 National Team has been drawn in Group F of the AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers 2020 alongside hosts Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan in the qualifiers that are slated from November 2-10, 2019.

Head Coach of the Indian U-19 National Team Floyd Pinto said, “It is a tough draw for us and we are aware of the strengths our opponents possess. But at the same time the boys have shown that they can fight against some of the best teams (in the Hero I-League) and we are hopeful of our qualification chances”

“We would have to be on the top of our game if we are to qualify from this group”, he added. Saudi Arabia will host all the qualifiers of Group F.

In 2017, the Indian U-19s were also drawn with Saudi Arabia as hosts. But despite a 3-0 win over Turkmenistan and a 0-0 draw against Yemen, a 5-0 loss to Saudi Arabia could not help their chance of progression from the qualifiers, with only one team making it through to the Championship.

The India U-19 Women’s team completed a mammoth victory over Pakistan, as they pumped 18 goals past their neighbours in their opening match of the first round of the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship Qualifiers on Wednesday (October 24, 2018).

Renu turned in a five-star performance, as she put five past the Pakistan keeper, all in the second half, to help India earn a massive win. The Indians got on the game right from kick-off and maintained the intensity on their opponents right through the match, as they took the scoreline well into double figures.

Manisha opened the scoring in the second minute after a melee inside the box saw her end up with some space from close range as she pulled the trigger. This goal opened the proverbial floodgates, as Manisha scored another (25’), while Devneta also netted twice (9’ and 25’). Daya Devi also got in on the act, scoring in the 27th minute. Meanwhile, Pakistan goalkeeper Eman Fayyaz scored an own goal, to round off the first 30 minutes.

Papki Devi and captain Jabamani Tudu also scored two in injury time, to make it 9-0 at half-time. The Indian girls picked up right where they left off, as Manisha and Daya Devi scored two more right after the kickoff. Renu produced a five-star performance, as she scored five goals after coming on in the second half. Her supreme form meant that coach Alex Ambrose decided to push Devneta Roy back into the hole while Renu led the line.

Roja Devi (59’) Soumyta Guguloth (77’) scored the other two goals, to make it 18-0 for India. “It was a great result for us. This kind of a win gives a lot of boost to our girls, and hopefully, we can go ahead and do better in the next game as well,” said India head coach Alex Ambrose after the match. Meanwhile, Pakistan gaffer Mohammad Siddique Sheikh opined that it is a learning curve for Pakistan, as their players were on the pitch for the first time after a long gap.

“We were banned by FIFA for three and a half years. So we played absolutely no football back then. Indiahave already started an impressive development of their women’s game. We are just starting out on that front. It will take time, but we have to treat this as a learning experience,” he said.

India Starting XI: Archana; Papki Devi, Thahenbi, Samiksha, Kanchan Chanu; Jabamani Tudu (C), Grace Lalrampari, Roja Devi; Manisha, Daya Devi, Devneta Roy.

Indian U-19 ended their AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Turkmenistan in the last match of Group D

Turkmenistan

Second half strikes from Skipper Amarjit Singh (74’), Abhishek Halder (80’) and Edmund (90+2) proved to be the difference between the two sides in a match largely dominated by the Indian colts.

India started off aggressively as the young colts dominated possession in the final third creating few close chances. The big chance came in the 13th minute when Rahim Ali’s rasping shot from inside the box got blocked by the Turkmenistan’s defence before rolling towards their custodian for an easy save. Seven minutes later, Ali was at it again, however this time as well his shot was saved by the opposition custodian.

India continued domination and came close to opening the lead when in the 26th minute, Amarjit set up Nongdamba Naorem whose shot from outside the box went inches wide of the goal. Despite the domination in the first half, both teams went into the tunnel on level pegging as the score read 0-0.

The second half began with the same vigour for Indians and in the 51st minute it almost paid off when Boris Singh, after playing a one-two with Abhishek Halder, got clear on to goal only shoot wide of the post. However at the other end against the run of play Turkmenistan almost took the lead but the final shot rattled the crossbar. Two minutes later on the other end of play, Anwar Ali’s powerful header off a Sanjeev Stalin corner went inches over the crossbar.

An end to end game began as soon Dheeraj was called in to action, as the custodian pulled off a spectacular save to keep Turkmenistan from scoring after Anwar Ali had lost his marking player. However, just when it looked like Turkmenistan is beginning to control the game, India came back with a goal. In the 74th minute, India took the lead after Amarjit Singh blasted the ball home to make it 1-0.

Five minutes later Abhishek Halder doubled the lead after he tapped the ball into an empty net following an accurate cross from the right flank. Turkmenistan looked to go all out attack in the final moments of the game. The move eventually gave India its third goal as Edmund converted a counter-attacking move to finish the game at 3-0

The game ended with India earning four points in three matches of their AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers with a third place finish in the group D and out of the qualifications race.
