Come this Friday, the Southern Derby is here. The enthralling party between arch-rivals Kerala Blasters and Chennaiyin FC is here this Friday. Both sides come in to the game with picking up wins in their respective previous encounter. Chennaiyin FC will be looking forward to conquering their second South Indian derby.
Let’s take a look at the key talking points.

Kerala Blasters

Strength

Kerala Blasters FC vs Northeast United FC witnessed the resurgence of Rene Meulensteen’s side. The inclusion of Wes Brown into the squad injected new life to the attack while the defense did their part well. Sandesh Jhingan, and Co. were not the same defense as seen against FC Goa. The defense performed, learning from the inexplicable flaws they had made against FC Goa, and stood indomitable throughout the game. Rene will likely resort to the same strategy he used against Northeast United, and it’ll again provide the defense situation to prove their worth.

Weakness

Kerala Blasters have a good bunch of orchestrators, but they’re unable to dominate the game. Their midfielders are active, and dynamic, but lacks the fine touch, which could entirely twist the tale. Rene will have to bring more order to his midfield, and it is must stand against the buoyant Chennaiyin squad.

Player to watch out.

Rino Anto: Criticized many times for his poor performance, Rino’s performance against Northeast United FC caught the eyes of the fans, and the pundits alike. Rino was lethal in the flanks, stern at the defense. His denying a Northeast United attempt near the post, got the attention of the Indian Football fraternity, and will be looking to resume his stellar performance.

Chennaiyin FC

Dhanpal Ganesh’s dramatic late winner silenced the Fortress as Chennaiyin FC put it past hosts Bengaluru FC 2-1 in a sixth-round clash of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). In a match that was billed as a ‘Southern Derby’ with both coaches making it clear there was added motivation to win this one, Jeje Lalpekhlua provided Chennaiyin FC with the lead in the fifth minute. It stayed that way till the end of the first half but Bengaluru FC, who have scored most of their goals in the second session, got the equaliser in the 85th minute. With five minutes still left to be played, Bengaluru FC fancied their chances of even securing the winner but the much-celebrated match-winner came at the other end as Ganesh headed home in the 88th minute. It was a dramatic end to an invigorating clash that took them to 12 points from six matches, the same as Bengaluru FC and FC Goa, who have a match in hand. Chennaiyin FC, however, are placed third with an inferior goal average. Chennaiyin FC won’t mind that, particularly because this victory comes after their loss in Mumbai. John Gregory’s side put up a commendable team performance, although it was a great defensive display from players like captain Henrique Sereno, Mailson Alves, Inigo Calderon and Dhanpal Ganesh which helped them hand Bengaluru FC their first defeat at home this season. Chennaiyin FC were also helped by an early goal, scored by their top Indian goal-scorer, Jeje. It came in slightly lucky circumstances as Lenny Rodrigues's clearance deflected off Chhetri and landed right in front of Jeje who did well to slam it past goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Bengaluru FC coach Albert Roca made six changes to his side as he rested Juanan, Subhasish Bose, Udanta Singh, Erik Paartalu and Braulio Nobrega along with goalkeeper Lalthuammawia Ralte and it showed in their performance as they could not impose themselves on the opposition. Even their highest goalscorer, Miku, who scored in the last four matches, was kept quiet throughout. It was only in the second session that Bengaluru showed more urgency, and with Udanta on the field, chances came thick and fast. Captain Chhetri missed from close range early in the second half but more than made up for that miss with a superb equaliser in the 85th minute. Left unmarked, Chhetri simply picked up a pass from Toni Dovale and gave Chennaiyin goalkeeper Karanjit Singh no chance with his half-volley. Chhetri appeared to have rescued a crucial point and saved Bengaluru's proud home record at the Fortress. However, Dhanpal Ganesh silenced the crowd in the 88th minute when he rose high to meet a scorner from Rene Mihelic.

Strength

Chennaiyin’s performance against Bengaluru FC helps us evaluate the performance of them. Chennaiyin’s defense stood strong against the buoyant Bengaluru FC attackers after scoring the first goal. Sunil Chhetri, Miku and Co. unleashed lethal attempts, but Inigo Calderon, and partners stood indomitable until Chhetri slotted one past Karanjith Singh

Weakness

Chennaiyin’s weakness is in their midfield. Their midfield is performing fine, but their performance against Bengaluru FC after Jeje’s fine touch, was inferior. Despite Roca starting the eleven not with many usual starters, Bengaluru FC had the dominance, and it was obvious. Sloppy performance from the midfield would’ve counted, had not the defense stood ample and tenacious..

Player to watch out.

Rapheal Augusto : The Brazilian wizard is the linchpin of Gregoy’s squad. He bolsters the attack for the Marina Machans, and his presence has been playing an integral role in their squad. Despite their midfield being quiet for almost all the time against Bengaluru FC, Rapheal Augusto did his job perfectly to launch attacks, as well as to deny some incomings.
