Day 3 Round up: Don Bosco Challenge Cup 2016

The third day of Don Bosco Challenge Cup 2016 with major support from Mr. Nitesh Rajhans Singh, held at Don Bosco College Ground, Kurla concluded on a high note after four intensed Quarter-Finals clashes.

The Tournament is organized in memory of Seven Don Bosco College Students, Bernadette D, Erwin D, Akash Thapar, Taha Shaikh, Brian Fernando, Sajid Chaudhary and Sharjeel Shaikh who lost their lives in a tragic incident last October in Kurla.

Number of Guests were invited to witness the Quarter-Finals matches: Father Mario Vaz – Executive Director of BMS in Don Bosco College, Dilip Ramchandra Mane – Assistant Police Inspector of VB Police Station, Police Sub Inspector – Ankush Randive, Steven Dias – Former Indian International, Henry Picardo – Mumbai FC’s Team Manager.

Here is the Round-up of all the four Quarter-Finals fixtures:

Don Bosco ‘B’ v/s Bank of India

In the first Quarter-Finals of Don Bosco Challenge Cup 2016 between Don Bosco ‘B’ and Bank of India, the home team registered a narrow 1-0 win against a spirited Bank of India side.

Kenyon Alphonso’s goal in the first-half proved to be decisive as it turned out to be the only goal of the match. Don Bosco’s custodian Roncy Gomes was one of the standout performer of the match after making handful of excellent saves.

In the dying minutes of the match Roncy made a breathtaking save which almost looked like a goal from Bank of India.

Don Bosco ‘B’ would be hoping to secure their place in the Final when they will meet Karnataka Sports Association (KSA) on next Sunday in the Semis.

It was Bank of India’s Shankar Thakur who was named as the Man of the Match for his splendid performance. Father Mario Vaz, Executive Director of BMS in Don Bosco College awarded Shankar with the award.

Karnataka Sports Association (KSA) v/s Soccer Raiders

In the second Quarter-Finals Karnataka Sports Association (KSA) turned around the match after being 1-0 down to defeat Soccer Raiders 3-1 to progress in the Semis.

Ashley Fernandes opened the scoring for Soccer Raiders early in the first-half after a scramble inside the box but KSA’s Michael Idewele levelled the score just before the half-time after a fine finish from the edge of the box.

KSA turned the deficit into the lead in the second-half when Michael registered his second goal of the game just before Shailesh Jadhav’s thunderous goal which send KSA into the last four.

Soccer Raiders Ashley Fernandes was given the Man of the Match award by Guest Honor Dilip Ramchandra Mane (Assistant Police Inspector of VB Police Station) and Police Sub Inspector Ankush Randive.

Mumbai FC U19 v/s Kenkre ‘A’

Kenkre ‘A’ caused a major upset after making an incredible comeback to win the match 3-1 against Mumbai FC U19 after being trailing 1-0 in the dying minutes.

Chinmay scored the opening goal early in the first-half when Kenkre’s goalkeeper failed to clear the ball, leaving Chinmay to make a challenge which actually turned out to be a goal. Somehow Mumbai FC held their nerves for the majority of the second-half unless a late twist in the tale awaited Mumbai.

Kenkre’s Nathan levelled the score in the last minutes of the match from Shuntan’s corner before Shuntan himself made it 2-1 after Mumbai FC’s goalkeeper Manish Shetty clearance fell into Shuntan’s path.

Brent scored the third and final goal in the injury time to complete the turnaround and send Kenkre ‘A’ into the last four.

Mumbai FC’s Noel Dias was awarded with the Man of the Match by Clifford Gomes (Managing Director of Cliff Kumar Engineering) and Ashfaq Khan (MDRT in Max Life Insurance).

Companeores v/s Air India U19

A supreme display of attacking football sends Air India U19 into the last four of Don Bosco Challenge Cup 2016.

Splendid goals from Troy Nunes (2), Dan Dias, Jagdish and Bipin Rawat were enough to send them through. Air India U19 now has scored 11 goals in 2 matches in this Tournament so far.

Air India’s Craig’s fine cross was met by Troy in the first-half who brilliantly headed home to break the deadlock. The second goal was nothing short of perfection, a pure counter attacking football.

Jagdish found Craig before he laid it towards Troy on the right flank, with Dan Dias bursting into the box, Troy put a ball accross the goal which was comprehensively tapped in by Dan to make it 2-0.

Jagdish, Bipin and Troy scored again the second-half to register a thumping 5-0 victory.

Companeores Carlton Miranda received a Jersey for the Best Performer of the match and Joshua for the Man of the Match award Gabirel D’Mello and Julius John.

The Tournament will resume on next Sunday with two Semi-Finals on its way. Don Bosco ‘B’ will face Kenkre ‘A’ whereas Air India U19 will lock horns against Karnataka Sports Association (KSA).
